    About the Chrome LLM thing:

    Google has been working for 15 years now (maybe longer) on dismantling the Internet that you love and cherish.

    Fuck them. Don't use their stuff. It's toxic. All of it.

    @thomasfuchs

    @EUCommission

    I doubt that installing a 4 GB proprietary LLM secretly and without any consent can be legal in the #EU - even if Donald wants it to be (!)

    While I advised you on DMS/DSA in "federating systems", I wrote tons of informal complaints and nothing happened but I do not have time to write these things formal cause meanwhile they are Captain Obvious !

    Ich danke sie.

        @thomasfuchs I can't disagree, but every time someone comes up with an alt browser, it turns out that the project is run by a complete fuckhead, isn't what it says it is, eventually has AI shoved into it or it has its own data collection for potentially unsavoury purposes.

        What browser can I acutally use that isn't somewhow mired in BS?

          @prab97 Just FYI Brave is run by a homophobic religious fanatic backed with money from Peter Thiel.

          @thomasfuchs @prab97 does this not describe the political moment we find ourselves in, generally?

              @jenesaisquoidirehelp @thomasfuchs Being technically correct is the best type of correct, but how do I install that on my Mac or my Windows PC? Fairly sure I can install it on my Linux laptop, but that's not my daily driver.

                    @thomasfuchs I'm a happy user of Kagi search. For so many people, getting away from the G monster's search is an easy and effective first step.

                        (Inb4, yes alternatives have existed. The most famous being an attempt to make a phone version of Ubuntu. I argue not that they didn't exist, but that they were never very serious. Effort was put in, but only a little and then each such thing has been more or less dropped because everyone decided Android was good enough and the problems in adapting anything else weren't worth the effort to get around.)

                        I guess I should say the biggest issue of all is proprietariness effectively owns the "smart" device markets.

                        In all this time everyone should have been working hard to break open those locked down ecosystems, but instead very little has ever truly been done. SoC manufacturers lock everything behind NDAs, service providers lock functions behind paid licenses, etc etc. It's a mess.

                        @nazokiyoubinbou When iOS was introduced we had BlackBerry OS, MeeGo, and Tizen all were incredibly popular Ubuntu touch didn't come around until the duopoly had been established.

                        My BB 8830 world is probably my favorite cell phone and I've had one since 1992 or so
