About the Chrome LLM thing:

Google Chrome is the biggest Trojan horse of them all.
Solely designed to cement in their monopoly with perhaps history's largest bait-and-switch scam.
“Don’t do evil” was the projection of abusers

Android as well! It was a trap right from the beginning, now closing (down) ...

Fuck them. Don't use their stuff. It's toxic. All of it.
@thomasfuchs It really really truly is just this simple isn't it?
Ok, Mozilla is a bit hostile too, but, regardless, with each mainline we have third party options.

@thomasfuchs They even got rid of it. Kind of feels like it really said something that they even stopped saying that...

@quincy @thomasfuchs Android is... complicated. I'd argue there is a fairness to the way it worked out even as much as it pains me. The true problem, IMO, comes in the fact that everyone just sort of accepted it as-is when they should have been working on other options.
Back when it started, Apple had all the money and power in regards to actually being able to break into the locked down ecosystems like those. The only reason Google was able to get in there at all was by making it semi-open. But of course they had no vested interest in keeping that.
The initial real problem, then, would be the fact that service providers, hardware manufacturers, etc were allowed to be so locked down. But IMO the real problem since was how little seriousness was ever put into making alternatives.

(Inb4, yes alternatives have existed. The most famous being an attempt to make a phone version of Ubuntu. I argue not that they didn't exist, but that they were never very serious. Effort was put in, but only a little and then each such thing has been more or less dropped because everyone decided Android was good enough and the problems in adapting anything else weren't worth the effort to get around.)
I guess I should say the biggest issue of all is proprietariness effectively owns the "smart" device markets.
In all this time everyone should have been working hard to break open those locked down ecosystems, but instead very little has ever truly been done. SoC manufacturers lock everything behind NDAs, service providers lock functions behind paid licenses, etc etc. It's a mess.

@thomasfuchs Brave and Vivaldi are a breath of fresh air, although built on chromium.

@Felis_Catus_Domesticus No, it's not. Fuck off with the Apple bashing when it's simply not true.

@thomasfuchs @prab97 And Vivaldi is still not open-sourcing their browser, so who knows what might they slip in the future without the end users knowing it. If you absolutely must use something based on the Chromium engine, use Ungoogled Chromium or an equivalent. -

@thomasfuchs @Felis_Catus_Domesticus They do have their points of criticism (the closed platform, the overinflated prices, the low repairability, and the fact that they constantly bow down to governments like China and the UK), but curiously enough, they're among the few phone manufacturers to take data privacy somewhat seriously. -

@thomasfuchs @Felis_Catus_Domesticus Not only does Apple forbid any non-webkit browser engine on their walled platform and refuse to implement core web APIs on webkit for as long as possible, it's hostile to the rest of the open web even outside iOS: https://infrequently.org/2025/09/apples-crimes-against-the-internet-community/

@thomasfuchs I'm using FireFox and shall continue as it's a lesser evil. I flipped the AI switch off, and also used the JustTheBrowser script to lock it out completely.

I doubt that installing a 4 GB proprietary LLM secretly and without any consent can be legal in the #EU - even if Donald wants it to be (!)
While I advised you on DMS/DSA in "federating systems", I wrote tons of informal complaints and nothing happened but I do not have time to write these things formal cause meanwhile they are Captain Obvious !Ich danke sie.
