Requiring TPM in Windows 11 was stupid and created PC landfill during an economic, global and ecological crisis, to drive hardware profit margins and Microsoft Surface sales.

Requiring NPUs would do the same, during an additional cost of living crisis. If Microsoft go ahead with that, it's time to swap OS.

@GossiTheDog Feels like MS is jealous of how frequent Apple users upgrade, or at least, say how often they upgrade.

@GossiTheDog It’s like they’re begging people to ditch Windows. It’s been all downhill since Windows 2000.

@GossiTheDog will anyone even be able to afford a PC or laptop in 2027/28? Memory and storage prices being what they are.

@GossiTheDog Ubuntu 25.10 is security wise very interesing secureboot, sudo-rs etc. Gnome Wayland only. I think for beginners that might be good beginning later I would recommend Fedora Desktop version. Has SELinux etc. more secure. 💡

@GossiTheDog The most reputable source I've seen on this, PC World, says the evidence suggests NPU will be necessary for full functionality, not necessary full stop.

@GossiTheDog I mean, imho the issue wasn't win 11 requiring TPM and such. I can completely understand the will to draw a line, after which you have a guaranteed baseline, drop some legacy stuff, etc

The issue is the sunset of win10 ; which has the causes and consequences you describe.

If they had kept win10 around for, say, 5-10 more years at least, it would've been fine imho.

@willegible I guess they'll be back to the Windows "S" versions, and they'll try to sell the OS upgrades the whole time. This is, if people are able to afford a new PC in 2027/2028.

@GossiTheDog Windows is already dead to me. None of my home devices have run it in 2 years. And this is coming from someone who used to love Windows, I was in the Insider program when 10 first launched.

@toadjaune @GossiTheDog the TPM wasn't a serious requirement. Security in Windows servers are more important, and they don't require TPM or any server equivalent to upgrade Windows server.

There's a bunch of media reporting - I don't know how accurate - that Windows 12 will require an NPU (a fake AI chip basically), which almost no PCs have, amongst other stupid features.

I've already decided to migrate to Linux for my home use.
