There's a bunch of media reporting - I don't know how accurate - that Windows 12 will require an NPU (a fake AI chip basically), which almost no PCs have, amongst other stupid features.

Requiring TPM in Windows 11 was stupid and created PC landfill during an economic, global and ecological crisis, to drive hardware profit margins and Microsoft Surface sales.
Requiring NPUs would do the same, during an additional cost of living crisis. If Microsoft go ahead with that, it's time to swap OS.
@GossiTheDog I mean, imho the issue wasn't win 11 requiring TPM and such. I can completely understand the will to draw a line, after which you have a guaranteed baseline, drop some legacy stuff, etc
The issue is the sunset of win10 ; which has the causes and consequences you describe.
If they had kept win10 around for, say, 5-10 more years at least, it would've been fine imho.

@GossiTheDog You forgot the part that Windows 12 will be subscription based, so monthly fee for having a privilege to have spyware and ads on your PC
-
@GossiTheDog The most reputable source I've seen on this, PC World, says the evidence suggests NPU will be necessary for full functionality, not necessary full stop.
@willegible I guess they'll be back to the Windows "S" versions, and they'll try to sell the OS upgrades the whole time. This is, if people are able to afford a new PC in 2027/2028.

@GossiTheDog Windows is already dead to me. None of my home devices have run it in 2 years. And this is coming from someone who used to love Windows, I was in the Insider program when 10 first launched.

@willegible @GossiTheDog will I still be able to run Notepad though?

@toadjaune @GossiTheDog the TPM wasn't a serious requirement. Security in Windows servers are more important, and they don't require TPM or any server equivalent to upgrade Windows server.

I've already decided to migrate to Linux for my home use. -

@GossiTheDog I don't remember it saying NPU but the 26H1 update will only be available on some ARM chips. (like the copilot laptops)

@GossiTheDog \o/ (i do hope that microsoft make that move, so that we can seriously work on alternatives solutions ^^ )

@GossiTheDog Linux or MacOS, never had MS above DOS core

@FreakyFwoof yeah I ninja edited, I typo'd 10
@GossiTheDog @FreakyFwoof This is one reason I was holding off buying any new machines at the moment. I really hope MS require this for an optional AI feature but I'm not buying anything now until we know minimum specs for sure. I was hoping my next machine was ARM based anyway.

@GossiTheDog looks like a great time to short Microsoft stock.

The tech bro oligarchs must be stopped.
These monopolists/cartels believe #enshitification is a divine right that demands feudal obedience from the powerless masses that owe them fealty and gratitude.
I don't understand why people put up with it

@GossiTheDog isn’t Windows 11 26H1 not the precursor to this?

@GossiTheDog I find it hard to believe so many people still use Microslop at all. As an enterprise user their software is garbage (endless broken promises and delayed roadmaps on critical infrastructure IDS software, for example) but at least it's expensive. Teams is a dumpster fire (but it's 30% vibe coded, YAY!) serious, Nadella should be fired and that's only the start. But yeah, anyway, use Linux, it's been desktop-daily-driverable for years now. PopOS! is quite normie friendly..
