Let the truth be told, let the press be free.
Journalists give voice to the voiceless, hold power to account, and keep citizens informed often at great personal risk.
Too many face intimidation, censorship, and violence simply for doing their job.
This World Press Freedom Day, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting journalists and defending independent media.
Because free press is the foundation of democracy.
@EUCommission the why not pressure #israel more about killing #journalists. About not letting #journalists into #gaza?

@EUCommission Then stop pushing for ID verification online.
Not every opinion needs to be bound to an ID. Let journalists and everyone else be anonymous if they need or want to. -
@ikuturso @EUCommission Either you believe in the basic legal principle that everyone's innocent until proven guilty, or you don't. Has he been tried and found guilty of committing a crime, or not? What follows that sort of legal understanding is also this: https://www.icc-cpi.int/news/icc-strongly-rejects-new-us-sanctions-against-judges-and-deputy-prosecutors
@Lykkerik @EUCommission Nah, this has nothing to do with that "basic legal principle" as I already explained. The ICC sanctions by the USA are utterly indefensible in comparison to these as they are targeting an independent international court performing its appropriate legal functions, something that shouldn't even be the basis of sanctions in the first place.

@#BlindAltBot Dead terrorists, good terrorist.

@EUCommission well done. Now start sanctioning Israel for constantly targeting journalist.

@EUCommission You are starving a German journalist's children because he dared to write about the genocide of Palestinians!

@ikuturso @EUCommission The U.S. sanctions these individuals for the work they do. They also sanction Francesca Albanese. No legal proceedings, just accusations and punishment. An important part of the accusations against Hüseyin Doğru come from Germany for anti-Israel activities. So not very different at all. Both states have eagerly supported the Zionist genocide on the Palestinians and persecuted opponents to the same. We must protest these violations against legal principles and free speech!

@Lykkerik @EUCommission I'm aware but as I said there is a fundamental difference between .sanctioning an international court just doing its job for very flimsy reasons vs. sanctioning an organization that was clearly set up by a foreign state actor to spread propaganda on behalf of the Russians directly in the EU.
-
@EUCommission
Journalism that depends on advertising and "clicks" will only ever echo the wants of the oligarchy, never seek out the truth, and never challenge the status quo.The news is shit. With all the "reporters" at the White House Correspondents' Dinner shooting we know virtually NOTHING about the attack. Did the attacker fire a shot? NO. Who shot the SS agent then? Had to be the first SS agent. Bullet is conveniently "lost", say liar Todd Blanche. Who fired the others shots and how many? All the reporters there and they didn't see anything.

@ikuturso @EUCommission The sanctions are aimed at individuals. Either you think it is in principle okay that states and supranational organizations such as the EU can adopt and implement sanctions against individuals without prior legal process, or you don't. Basic legal principles such as "you are innocent until proven guilty" are not something you use only when it suits you.

@EUCommission The free press relies on the ability to be pseudonymous, both for the journalists and their sources.
Don't undermine the foundation of our open societies by building infrastructure for ubiquitous online identity verification.

@Lykkerik @EUCommission you still seem to be missing the fact that this is simply not a part of the legal system where this principle holds so it isn't a valid criticism for it.
now, to be fair I guess you could use that as a generic argument for sanctions being a problematic mechanism just in general but that is a pretty different discussion.
