Let the truth be told, let the press be free.
Journalists give voice to the voiceless, hold power to account, and keep citizens informed often at great personal risk.
Too many face intimidation, censorship, and violence simply for doing their job.
This World Press Freedom Day, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting journalists and defending independent media.
Because free press is the foundation of democracy.

@EUCommission No charges. No trial. No conviction. Just punishment.

@EUCommission then start cleaning your own house, if I look at the World Press Freedom Index personally I think that anything under 90% in our EU is unacceptable and should be fixed immediately! Naturally if you want to silence press by #chatcontrol or forcing to publish sources.....

@EUCommission so, about that... Israel is not committed to any of these values, as seen by their genocidal and cruel treatment of their neighbors. Would you kindly remind them of that by severing ties with them?

@EUCommission also... If freedom of the press is the foundation of democracy, then billionaires buying and dismembering any media outlet and pushing their propaganda is a ticking bomb... So let's regulate them out of their unnecesary wealth.

@EUCommission for this independence, it will require a reliable source of unconditional support.
-
@EUCommission it’s owned by Axel Springer here.
@doc let's say dominated, Axel Springer SE does not control all the press in Germany, but it's able to set the talking points and draw public attention to where they want it to be.
(… not to mention our dysfunctional public broadcast …)

@Lykkerik @EUCommission if he indeed was funneling Russian state money into propaganda projects it seems entirely appropriate, that isn't journalism.

@Lykkerik @EUCommission it's exactly how sanctions are supposed work, they're not at all a "punishment" in the sense that convictions in the justice system are.
That's not to say they cannot be challenged legally after the fact of course if there's any real basis to do it. In this case it sounds like there may not really be.

@ikuturso @EUCommission So, to avoid the annoying legal principle that you're innocent until proven guilty, we use sanctions because sanctions (blocking an individual and his family's existence) is not punishment. Sounds alarmingly antidemocratic to me.

@Lykkerik @EUCommission well, if we started seeing cases where state actors weren't really involved and the connection to foreign policy was not really defensible I'd agree it would be worrying.
