He had no idea I transitioned, which I started about 5 months before I left that job. We'd been in contact since I left, but I finally felt like I would just come out and see what happened. He said "if it makes you happy, then I'm happy for you."Be cynical about that response if you want, as some may. Maybe it changed him fundamentally, or maybe it just stopped him from spouting more violence about us in front of another closeted trans person. I call it a win.
