If it wasn't for trans visibility, I wouldn't be here.
I was a ghost of a person on my 35th birthday. There was really nothing to me, only a desire to help other people and self-annihilate. I was invisible, intangible, in every way that mattered.
Trans people being visible changed that.
One of the things I've seen in the last couple of years, as the assholes have tightened the screws on us, is a wailing by certain corners of the trans community that it was our own visibility, our own hubris, that brought this on us.
That the trans tipping point has tipped back.
Bullshit.
I've seen people lament slipping support for trans folks, trans rights, that we're losing everything we've fought for.
Bullshit.
Go into the crosstabs of those surveys and you'll see the only group backsliding is Republicans. They're just doing what they always do for the Minority Of The Year.
Once the hate machine moves on, as it always does, they'll forget and their support levels will go back to normal, as they always do.

I remember the late '00s, the avalanche of constitutional amendments banning gay marriage. I remember the fear, the hate, the huge support for those measures. And now massive majorities support gay marriage. *Massive*.
We win by being visible.
I want to repeat that.
We win by being visible.
All of our research shows that the main way to deradicalize a bigot is for a member of the group they hate to be just... visible. Unremarkable. It doesn't work on everyone, of course, but the lies and fear and hatred that radical bigotry relies on at the most basic levels *CANNOT* survive contact with reality for long.
Being visible is how we beat this. It always has been. It always will be.
Being visible changes the world.
When they fight us, we fight back harder. Listen to your elders.

Today is Trans Day of Visibility, and I fight to be as visible as I can every day, because other people's visibility saved my goddamned life, but more importantly because being trans is fucking beautiful.
Let me repeat that.
Being trans is fucking beautiful.
I wouldn't want to be any other way.
I hope your Trans Day of Visibility today is fierce and joyful.
When we're visible, we win. Always.

@Impossible_PhD I was JUST mulling this over yesterday.
I've seen articles titled "The trans tipping point is over, and we lost." And I'm like "the hell we did!"
I've never heard more people say the word "trans." I've never seen more allies say "trans rights." I've never seen more politicians say "no friggin way" to bigoted legislation.
We're in the spotlight and I HATE it. I wanna be left alone.
But the tipping point isn't over. We're just in the middle of the storm and nothing has settled out yet. Giving up now would be an absolutely pathetic position to take, when we have so much advantage right now.

@Impossible_PhD “they’re attacking us because we are visible” is the new “why would I ever read anything written by a Black feminist?”

@Impossible_PhD Thank you. I was 33 and the only thing that was tethering me to life was a sense of duty & responsibility. If it weren't for all the amazing people out there being themselves, making art, and living, I'm not sure where I would be.

@Impossible_PhD "the main way to deradicalize a bigot is for a member of the group they hate to be just... visible."
A former coworker that was extremely transphobic checked in on me via text to see how I was doing. He had no idea I transitioned, which I started about 5 months before I left that job. We'd been in contact since I left, but I finally felt like I would just come out and see what happened. He said "if it makes you happy, then I'm happy for you."
Be cynical about that response if you want, as some may. Maybe it changed him fundamentally, or maybe it just stopped him from spouting more violence about us in front of another closeted trans person. I call it a win.
