Il punto è che noi viviamo, purtroppo, in un mondo che ci costringe a scegliere tra cattive opzioni. Quindi, da una parte consideriamo drammatico l'avvio di un altro conflitto, e non sottovalutiamo gli impatti diretti - soprattutto di carattere economico - che quel conflitto può generare per l'Italia, ma dall'altra sappiamo che si tratta di conseguenze che non sono neanche paragonabili ai rischi che correremmo se facessimo finta di nulla, di fronte allo scenario di un regime fondamentalista che massacra i suoi oppositori, colpisce i Paesi del Golfo e si dota di missili a lungo raggio con testate atomiche. Queste sono le nostre valutazioni, e le ragioni della nostra prudenza. Certo, sarebbe molto più facile per noi rispondere con slogan e frasi fatte, alimentando la comprensibile paura dei cittadini, ma sarebbe anche molto meno responsabile e molto più pericoloso".
