Honestly.. at first i was surprised (and disappointed) at some major Linux distributions not having a clear answer to age verification laws after weeks of their announcement, but then lots of them started discussing them. really! discussing them! what's there to be discussed? "maybe we can implement age checks in a privacy respecting manner? "And it's just so happens this serves the corporation that you work for best interests! @levi There are good reasons to complain about systemd but there are also bad reasons. You complained about ‘email address’ field etc. These are bad reasons.I don’t like to prioritise corporate interests, but if the corporate usecase doesn’t harm real people’s needs then I don’t see it as an issue worth complaining about.I don’t like age verification but this is not a problem invented by the systemd developers and blaming them for it is silly IMO.

@itsfoss Politicians, local representatives, and the organizations lobbying for these laws are the actual targets worth going after.

@mrmasterkeyboard Honestly I'd be surprised if OS-level age verification isn't outright unconstitutional in some countries. For OSes like Windows, Android, or macOS it could be argued that the age verification is for the online services being offered that are baked into the OS, but for OSes with no online anything like most Linux distros or BSDs, that excuse doesn't hold any water.

@openrightsgroup rather than spreading childrens age and location around the internet it would be far better to outlaw sites that are designed to be addictive and do harm like Facebook, X, YouTube et al.

@itsfoss wrong approach, malicious compliance is the way to go when the governments enact stupid legislations. Now a law can be passed on top to make anyone using a non compliant OS a criminal, are these orgs going to help out any of their users who get caught out?.
