    Digital checkpoints will crop up all over the Internet after UK MPs backed new powers to expand age verification.

    The only way to block under-16s is to run checks on everybody.

    That's millions more people having to hand over personal data to unregulated providers just to access everyday services.

    @openrightsgroup I am obviously not going to be flashing any credentials at an "online checkpoint", and so a social media ban for teenagers will also be a social media ban for me, despite being considerably older.

    However, I doubt that they will practically be able to ban more decentralised protocols, such as ActivityPub, where there are no single chokepoints.

      @openrightsgroup

      What children do or do not do is the responsibility of the parents, not the state. Trying to enforce this will be a massive invasion of privacy for all adults.

        @openrightsgroup These unregulated providers… Palatir in that number per chance? Or perhaps their old chums Crapita et al?

          @AlisonW @openrightsgroup
          Under UK law a parent that does not exercise their authority over their children can be held accountable for a child's crimes.

              @openrightsgroup {Heavy sigh}
              WTF is wrong with these wankers in government (of all hues) that they keep cosying up to the worst people? Is venality a prerequisite for becoming a cabinet member?

                  @openrightsgroup The whole idea of under 16 bans with adding ID and age verification is just utter insanity with our governments!

                      @openrightsgroup Not to mention that (as any school’s IT admin will tell you) teenagers are very good at bypassing restrictions.
