    * you're all dumb haters
    * AI is a revolution just in the past few months
    * yes there were regressions but,
    * the new test suite is awesome you haters
    * openrsync doesn't pass the new test suite! ha, you fools! well that's cos it targets an older version but,

at least it reads like he wrote it by hand

i can pick the particular mastodon posts he's reacting to here

@davidgerard to be fair: we **are** all dumb haters. We just have good reasons to.
Also, many reactions *are* over the top.

    - Mourn the project
    - tell the unpaid-hobbyist maintainer you would have preferred he not use AI because of (well known reasons) **in a friendly manner**
    - fork the last known good commit and step up to maintain the project or hope someone else will.

Unless of course, they are being an ass about it. Then have at it.

@davidgerard The openrsync dig is cheap, and complaining about having to work instead of retiring only begs the question "why did you not do the work of finding a new maintainer, then?", but the part about being raged on I guess doesn't deserve this. He very well could have been dogpiled and that's nasty.

@davidgerard it doesn't even make sense on it's own terms.

If the point was to entirely switch to a python test codebase, why was he using the worst (according to LLMshills) system for that purpose?

To then take that and release the thing in a wholly broken form to the public?

...Ah, there it is. The thing that makes it clear you shouldn't pay attention to him and should find a slop-free version of rsync. The "it's inevitable" weasle-wording.

@davidgerard ok so the original rsync is actually dead now, shame

i hope debian will switch to alternatives like openrsync or the likes

@dlakelan @cstross @davidgerard But also the load on maintainers has gone up partly, but not entirely, due to AI generated vulnerability reports.

His response seems to have been to fight AI with AI.

@davidgerard This is the amount of level-headedness I wish to attain, and hopefully surpass but I think that comes with age.

And goddamn. 40 years software engineer xp... Pretty sure those weirdos cannot even compare.

Imagine if those weirdos decided to use their precious limited time in their lives to help out and be productive than yap... There's like hundreds or a thousand of them out there.

@davidgerard was it all written by human, especially when the most intimate part -- code -- is given to next chance token machines

I think of it in terms of reflection. What / how processes in one's brain gets warpped by this overall illusuion of deeper think in LLM (Large Language Condensates -- "model" is a missused word here).

What happens at lower level than that of "personality", "arrogant" -- at a level of how these bigger behaviours are assembled.

We gotta know, so as to help others not to get on this needle.

@davidgerard @dysfun Fedora (which I am not involved with, beyond using it on a single laptop) appears to have no problem with it. v3.4.3 was automatically pushed to FC45 <https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2026-52613027b0> and is in process of being pushed to FC44 <https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2026-d14cd355b3> and FC43. I don't see any objections coming from inside the project.

@kaasbaas @dlakelan @cstross withholding maintainer labour and refusing to keep working for free is a thing that worked for libxml2. i think that's my conclusion for today. if you're at the stage of posting "i'd rather be sailing", go fuckin sailing.

Tridge has responded on the rsync vibe disaster

                                          Just a moment...

@davidgerard FWIW I think David's characterization of Tridge's post is inaccurate. I'd encourage people to read it before piling on. Doesn't mean I agree with Tridge's approach here. And I acknowledge I may be biased because this guy has provided software that has repeatedly saved my ass and can do things that seem miraculous. Cutting him a little slack would seem appropriate.
