Google search is worse by design—internal memo

You didn’t imagine it: Google’s search is worse, and that’s by design, according to a document produced in discovery.

@Stellar @ocean What alternatives? The sites purporting to be are just scraping and repackaging Google and Bing. They do not have their own indices.

@ocean Search "ten blue links" and follow the instructions for making your default browser google-web. The udf=14? tag improves results significantly. Check my syntax on that...

@mark @ocean Except Betamax was better than VHS, and there's no good reason why we're not all carrying phones by Palm Pilot. The point isn't that Google is the best search service; It's that they've achieved such market dominance that they can still get away with being profitably bad.

@msbellows @mark @ocean As luck would have it, our internet search player is compatible with both Google and Bing, also a myriad of other “formats” that would not contain AI.

@ocean @pluralistic created a term for this corporate behavior. He calls it “enshittification” and he’d written a lot about it.
