Cycling ticks so many preppers' boxes:
• No government paperwork
• No surveillance
• No big corp lock-in
• Use your own power (literally 'stand on your own two feet’)
• No reliance on foreign oil

@gatesvp @blogdiva But the part they miss is that 99.9% of the time, going solo isn't the way to do it.
The most likely scenario is that a town or neighborhood will have most or all paths in and out cut off, and some or all utilities out of service for an extended period of time.
So what you need to do is address any imminent life threats (put out fires, evacuate unstable structures, rescue people trapped under debris) to the extent possible, then get together with neighbors (ideally not meeting them for the first time) and make a plan to deal with whatever is happening right where you are, because you're all you've got.
The three fire stations in my city of 13000 are not sending anyone to my tiny street when the big one hits regardless of how bad the damage is or how many injuries there are. There's too many of us and not enough of them.

Absolutely.
Humanity has gotten to where we are by cooperation in and between matriarchal groups for 98%* of our existence. Our sole basis for success is harnessing non-zero sum outcomes.
Yet here we are, in the last (hopefully not final) 2%* of the time of our existence on earth, where a bunch of arseholes show up, literally rape, pillage, murder destroying everything we’ve learned and build over 100.000s of years, while embracing the “top predator/ lone wolf” trope.
I wish everybody with their “I’ve got mine” to go live in some bunker. It will neatly serve as a tomb.
*) Patriarchy as dominant societal structure for about 7000 years, Homo sapiens (and others) living in matriarchal egalitarian societies for at least 300.000.

For me, biggest (in every way) issue, and one that you have mentioned, is water. We have a water based system. Consumption, cooking, hygiene, medical care all uses copious amounts of water, even if you’re trying to be careful. If you have 4 humans in a property you will likely use 25L of clean water for consumption and personal care alone per day. That doesn’t include toilets, anything other than a military wash and so forth. I have some bottled water stored for drinking only but to carry a week of water is hundreds of litres. And where we live is water on demand driven by the utilities electric pumps so we often get issues when the power fails.
I’ve seen some very clever and basic systems but can’t implement them due to the property.
@tempusfelix Water is why I don't understand having dried foods as one's Prep. They need both fuel and water to make them edible. Canned things which are safe to eat cold are safer, and contain some fluid of their own, which reduces the strain on the water hoard.

In my experience, the dried foods are only suitable for hiking where you can filter the water but don’t want to carry the weight. But, because a lot of the prep community come from a .mil background they have that mentality and the logistics guys sort out water.
Canned food always worked in the past, tastes a lot better and as you say, don’t need extra fluid to make them palatable.

As I was staff I had privileges which meant I could put a couple of crates in the logistics system for comfort rather than having to carry everything in my Bergen (rucksack). And as well as my kit needed for the role, mine did indeed include some tinned food (soups), homemade bread, an energy cake and a camp bed. The rationale being that as staff we needed to be in better condition to keep everyone else safe. Suffice to say my dinners of ration packs supplemented with bread were envied. After a while those things get boring fast and mess up your gut.

@tempusfelix @azonenberg @ahltorp The MRP and LRP meals are dried, even things that are liquid are so heavily extracted that you need to drink a lot of water if you consume them. C-Rats were a bit better because they had things actually in cans. But they also contained some dehydrated food products. I specifically remember the beef patty. It looked vaguely like a burger, but if you couldn't rehydrate it and had to just eat it dry, it was a dog biscuit. If you've stored dehydrated foods and you haven't stored a water processing unit, you're just fooling yourself.

Ah yes. The forgotten end of the cycle. Where the waste goes! We spent centuries figuring out how to deal with that. A hole in the ground simply doesn’t work long term.
