    OMG this whole “patriots“ #solar generator marketing is pure evil genius, but for the common good.

    i see these #ads during baseball games and they really go out of their way to hit all the MAGA redneck prepper notes; while selling the one thing the petromafia sugardaddies & their politician stooges dont want their base to embrace: solar energy.

    it’s #solarpunk machiavellism and it feels weirdly refreshing

      @blogdiva not a goddamn one of them has ever "generated" any portion of a Sun.

      They do provide gainful employment for scruffy right-wing dudebros, so they don't have to be an unemployed roofer or the backhoe operator who cuts a critical fiber connection somewhere in Loudoun County, Virginia, though.

        @gatesvp @blogdiva @Nicovel0 I have the same reaction when right-wing conservative types are anti-cycling.

        Cycling ticks so many preppers' boxes:
        • No government paperwork
        • No surveillance
        • No big corp lock-in
        • Use your own power (literally 'stand on your own two feet’)
        • No reliance on foreign oil
        • It is the number one freedom tool.

        @baoigheallain the preferred transport by a communist “enemy” decades ago (look up Ho Chi Minh Trail). Before the Russian influence on current politics in the US, anything to do with communism was enough to push conservatives miles away…

          For me, biggest (in every way) issue, and one that you have mentioned, is water. We have a water based system. Consumption, cooking, hygiene, medical care all uses copious amounts of water, even if you’re trying to be careful. If you have 4 humans in a property you will likely use 25L of clean water for consumption and personal care alone per day. That doesn’t include toilets, anything other than a military wash and so forth. I have some bottled water stored for drinking only but to carry a week of water is hundreds of litres. And where we live is water on demand driven by the utilities electric pumps so we often get issues when the power fails.

          I’ve seen some very clever and basic systems but can’t implement them due to the property.

          @tempusfelix Water is why I don't understand having dried foods as one's Prep. They need both fuel and water to make them edible. Canned things which are safe to eat cold are safer, and contain some fluid of their own, which reduces the strain on the water hoard.

                    @Ailbhe

                    In my experience, the dried foods are only suitable for hiking where you can filter the water but don’t want to carry the weight. But, because a lot of the prep community come from a .mil background they have that mentality and the logistics guys sort out water.

                    Canned food always worked in the past, tastes a lot better and as you say, don’t need extra fluid to make them palatable.

                    Edit to add a story.

                    I was part of the training and medical staff on a week long mil exercise. As I was staff I had privileges which meant I could put a couple of crates in the logistics system for comfort rather than having to carry everything in my Bergen (rucksack). And as well as my kit needed for the role, mine did indeed include some tinned food (soups), homemade bread, an energy cake and a camp bed. The rationale being that as staff we needed to be in better condition to keep everyone else safe. Suffice to say my dinners of ration packs supplemented with bread were envied. After a while those things get boring fast and mess up your gut.

                          @tempusfelix @azonenberg @ahltorp The MRP and LRP meals are dried, even things that are liquid are so heavily extracted that you need to drink a lot of water if you consume them. C-Rats were a bit better because they had things actually in cans. But they also contained some dehydrated food products. I specifically remember the beef patty. It looked vaguely like a burger, but if you couldn't rehydrate it and had to just eat it dry, it was a dog biscuit. If you've stored dehydrated foods and you haven't stored a water processing unit, you're just fooling yourself.

                              @dzwiedziu@mastodon.social @blogdiva@mastodon.social @licho@kolektiva.social I've long been a supporter of the fact that we should accept that the world makes no sense, and we should try to make even less sense if we want to see it steered on a decent path. So we should use any belief in making things better.
                              There was a post I read a billion years ago on tumblr of a person sending "fake" horoscopes to their friends to convince them to go to therapy: stuff like that is great.
