People are cheapskates with poor people but spendthrift with billionaires.
I just listened to someone complaining about how "the garbage union" has schemed so that there are always two people operating NYC garbage trucks to "waste my tax dollars" and I guess making too many wealthy sanitation workers... oh no the horror.
I like that there are two people on each truck. It's more efficient and safer. But, even if it was somehow a waste I promise you that's not who is wasting your money bud.
@futurebird wait there are only two workers per truck?
We* usually have 3-5, one driver with the rest collecting bins* were I am in Germany, no idea for the rest of it

@futurebird everyone knows rich people are motivated by getting more money and poor people are motivated by getting less money. (/s)

@futurebird
If one person takes three times as long to do the job, getting rid of one of them is not a sound financial decision.Trash is usually thrown in the back, opposite end as the cabin. Putting one person at each end saves a lot of walking back and forth.

My big concern is the same as Fran talks about in this video. When companies try to implement these systems they find ways to do it that steal public space. Why can't the robots park inside of your business and charge there? No room? Huh. Interesting.
Looking at the robots the first thing I think of is that in NYC people would sit on them. (which will be very funny) So that design won't last at least.

In the video, the part about the US prohibiting a Chinese radio telescope in Argentina is infuriating.
If MAGA wanted to compete with Chinese science they wouldn't have defunded all the US science. They just don't want any science anywhere.

@imikotoba @futurebird One garbage company here tried it with one worker per truck but they quickly went back to two. I don't know why; maybe you need fewer trucks with two workers, or maybe people refused to work solo like that.
The truck is the expensive item here, not the workers.
The people who are upset about two workers per truck have likely never done heavy labor before.

@futurebird When the rules change based on who it is, Wilhoit’s law demonstrates that it is conservatism, it’s essence.

@gimulnautti @futurebird If your first response to hearing about children being killed is to ask who's kids, there's something wrong with you.
-
@futurebird Reminds me of the joke about the guy who will do anything to protect his family but he just means killing someone. Not anything actually useful like making sure the kids are clean, well fed, getting with housework, etc.

@futurebird exactly!
Besides a driver upfront & two workers at the rear are the standard even in Europe, because most garbage trucks can take 1 big or twovregular/small containers at the same time and they do workflow to maximize the amount of containers they empty per time.
- There's a reason this job even has a traineeship program in Germany, and it's not just due to safety reasons, but because it is a demanding job.
- And the people doing this filthy job certainly deserve their paycheck, if not a hefty raise on top of the "Filthyness Premium".
Cuz unlike value-removing Billionaires, they do provide a vital service and prevent cities from choking in their own filth!
- Everyone who claims otherwise is a useful idiot who ate up classist propaganda.

@baishen Well, you know how a common trope in cop-speak is replacing common nouns with formal-sounding slightly more generic ones, like car -> 'vehicle' ?
In this case, this very same pattern applies, the stupid person just thought that 'doing anything' is the formal-sounding slightly more generic euphemism for 'murder'.

@baishen @futurebird This is all very "Protestant work ethics", classism, and trying to find ways to be a dick to others on the basis of some bullshit reason to feel superior to them.
@Illuminatus Probably more like Calvinist ethic. I've never heard German Protestants complain about two-person garbage collection teams, and there's plenty of Protestants around, and garbage collection has been done by two people every time I've seen it done. One drives the lorry, the other one picks up the yellow sacks or empties the containers into the lorry.
