@verge Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water. Harry Potter is a delight and kids can enjoy every minute of them.
JK has views most progressive thinkers don’t agree with but then Charles Dickens abhorred poverty but seemed fine with slavery. Each of us has choices to make. She has to live with herself. We can live without. -
@jaredwhite @verge in my opinion nothing can be unethical to consume. Granted the viewer understands the implications and context of the content.
@dm29 @jaredwhite @verge So, I do understand wanting to move from a binary ethical/unethical view into a more nuanced, want vs. need/burden to abstain and degree/likelihood of harm and how directly a given action leads to said harm, but I don’t agree that simple awareness and acceptance is enough, especially when that harm is a direct result of the action AND it compounds with other harms at the time,

@dm29 @jaredwhite @verge as is the case with Rowling’s revenue from her works getting funneled into anti-trans movements at a time when governmental efforts are also turned toward anti-trans oppression. People must push back any way they can when civil rights are being eroded, and that should involve shaming of others for contributing to that harm.

@verge I agree of course, but I would start with more fundamental issues like genocide of thousands of children in Palestine and that there is no ethical consumption of any services that are providing assistance to Israel to murder those civilians (almost entire BigTech etc.)

@webshinra @verge no, actually, putting terf shit in your brain is not ethical
@t54r4n1 @verge On the second part: putting anything I want in my brain is my choice, the alternative is pretty ugly.
Secondly, Harry Potter as books where not terf shit, and (probably non-volontary) say some encouraging stuff about self détermination.
I won't presume what will be done next, but the horrible person the author have become does not change retrospectively the stuff she wrote before.

@t54r4n1 I did that, and saw that (the antisemitism is arguable, the happy slave not) and many other stuff, thanks. I would not recommand my nephew to read those, and for reason far worse in my eyes than those two points.
So please, don't tell my what media is ethical to watch, which is a very different point than contributing to their economy/popularity.

I don’t know who needs to see this, but if you’re hungering for #UrbanFantasy, Juno Dawson’s amazing books are sitting right there. #Witches using #GirlPower to fight transphobes & the patriarchy. #A24 just needs to have her adapt them, license some Spice Girls tunes, & they’ll have a winning #movie “quadrilogy”.

You'd think she could afford to make-up a whole different story to tell.
Or maybe it's a way to retro-cram more JK bad-ideas into work that she now wants to use to directly manipulate malleable minds in-service to the greater fascist and hate machines.Shit, man. I still don't want Star Wars prequels or Road House remake. Not from a quality or nostalgia angle either. Just tell new stories is all. Retro retellings are the laziest kind of work from assholes who can afford to give-up.

The key difference is that it's quite difficult for most people to avoid big tech entirely, since most employers and even many governments require you to have a Google, Apple, or Microsoft account. On the other hand, it's pretty easy to just not watch any HBO shows, with comparatively few situations where you might "have" to (if you're a professional film critic, or if you're a kid and your parents are trying to make you watch it for some reason.) -

I thought about boosting this, but since it is behind a paywall.... I'll pass.

@agowa338 I’ve read the room, and the room I’m in tells me ”jokes” about violence against trans people are exactly what we don’t need right now.

@art_codesmith
And any good artist can recognize where the lines stop in their art.
She told her story, made many, many, manymanymanymany millions. It will carry forever.
It's time to stop and let others tell new stories.Unless its purpose now is to become something more than it was.
And what will that be?
In any case, fuck that. It's just another story about a magic baby. We've been here and beat this rocking-horsie to death. -
