    Google has news on what you will need to do for still being able to sideload apps:

    * enable developer options
    * confirm prompt that you are not tricked
    * restart phone and re-authenticate
    * wait one day doing nothing
    * confirm with biometrics or device PIN that you know what you are doing
    * enjoy the last the few apps that still have developers that are motivated to develop for a user-base willing to put up with this

    @grote I've avoided biometrics up to now and intend to keep avoiding them

      @grote

      Tbh, considering that border agents also sideload their spyware and then wipe it off when you have to hand them your phone unlocked and they vanish with it for a few minutes this is probably a good thing though.

      Also you've only to go through it once.

      The only question I have is if they'll allow Apps to query this, if they do then that'll be the bigger issue as then almost all anti-cheat, anti-tamper, and "root detection" frameworks will add it instantly...

      @agowa338 @grote no because the border agent spyware is "verified" because its from someone whos socially "allowed to" hurt you. and its "for your safety"

        @grote Herding people.

        I want to use my phone and install in it whatever I want. Google has nothing to say about that.

          @oatrapado @grote Europeans might come to the rescue in the coming years with creations like FairPhone and Jolla Phone. Maybe if the donations start flooding in, Pine64 might be convinced to put more effort into the PinePhone.

            @grote the argument is nice:

            "57% of surveyed adults experienced a scam in the past year, resulting in a global consumer loss of $442 billion"

            But the real question then is: How much scam and loss is due to malicious side loaded apps?

              @grote also: developers that have to be verified by Google anyway!

              (The original post is just client side, but Devs also face extra hurdles!)

                funnily at the moment it isn't. There have been some leaks as in some instances they "forget" to wipe it after use.

                Edit: But yea, they'd probably get it signed through governmental pressure in the end either way...

                      @agowa338 @grote it only isnt becuase they dont need it to be 'verified' at the moment, but google will just verify the 'approved malware' like they always have; this shit is meant to "keep you safe" in the same way border agents "keep you safe"

                              It should just be a toggle in developer options. Anyone who might "accidentally sideload their phone to death" isn't going to know where to look.

                                      Per the screenshot, biometrics are not necessary. The device PIN will also suffice.

                                      For what it's worth.

                                      IMHO...for now. The PIN will suffice...for now.

                                      I sincerely believe this is just one step G😈😈gle is taking towards a more "our way or the highway" goal.

                                      Remember, boiling frogs.

                                        @grote

                                        If we DO go through all this bullshit to sideload or get F-droid installed... so now our phone is in developer mode. Are there going to be any authorized Google store apps that detect developer mode and go "nuh-uh"? And if that's the case, and I disable developer mode (presumeably borking our F-droid/sideload apps?), will I have to wait 24 hrs to RE-enable dev mode?
