    "Door ajar" versus $100 billion valuation.

    Today I learned that you can DoS a Waymo by opening its door.

    "The More You Know..."

    Waymo, Google's autonomous vehicle company, and DoorDash, the delivery and gig work platform, have launched a pilot program that pays Dashers, at least in one case, around $10 to travel to a parked Waymo and close its door that the previous passenger left open.

    @jwz Leaving the Waymo doors open so someone can make $10 is praxis.

      @jwz

      be a real shame if someone crumbed all over the floor of their waymo, forgot to close the door and a nice extended rat family moved in... a 'better use' maybe? 🤔

          @jwz that should buy you enough time to also let the air out of the tires.

            @jwz have you looked at videos of Waymo "stacking"? It's hilarious. One person stands in front of the vehicle and then someone else goes around putting post-it notes or taping paper in front of their sensors. The car is effectively disabled at that point.

            My wife used to use a similar technique using post-it notes to disable automatic flushing toilets in public bathrooms when our kids were little because they were scared by the random flushing when the sensors didn't properly notice them.

                  @jwz Anecdotally in summer with full veg cover, if there are some tree limbs sticking out into the road, they'll glitch out a lil bit. They're impressive (and are more subdued and considerate than humans) but have a lot of fairly common failure modes, and this is in dense city grids where they have enough of them circulating around to get a full coverage refresh every day. Most of the US is unfortunately suburban sprawl (I was told a decade ago that all truck drivers would be obsolete soon, now they make more than ever. maybe I should switch😅 )

                          @jwz be a shame if someone repeated that stunt to call 50 waymos into a narrow one-way street, just to augment the experience by opening all doors.

                            Wait if the sensors can be tricked that easily, wont street dust and dirt do the same thing eventually if the cars aren't cleaned often enough? That seems like a safety issue.

                              @jwz It's basically the same thing as they need someone to plug them in. They cant plug themselves in either.

                              Waymos are still so awesome

                                @jwz Sure seems like you could kill this company dead quick if you could get enough people to just carry some post-it notes around with them and commit to opening the doors of any Wayno they see stopped at an intersection.
