@kyle_pegasus @zzt @rootwyrm Entryism at its finest.
@Wikisteff @kyle_pegasus @zzt @rootwyrm I know it's pedantic and not the real problem, but I'm very curious how they define "operating system".
My furnace has a logic board in it that, I think, is running some embedded, realtime OS. Do I need my ID to change my thermostat (which probably has it's own OS)?

@nerdpr0f @kyle_pegasus @zzt @rootwyrm This is a fantastic point, and a huge deal moving forward. Android will have all this, but embedded systems? No way.

@nerdpr0f @kyle_pegasus @zzt @rootwyrm I guess we'll have to do the equivalent of "Running Doom on your air conditioner display panel", but for how much serious linux can you get out of an anonymous headless linux distro...

@Wikisteff @nerdpr0f @kyle_pegasus @rootwyrm the point of these laws isn’t to be consistent. the point of these laws is to harm you and me. the people proposing and enforcing these laws don’t give a fuck what an operating system is, only that it’s a concept they can use as a weapon. do you really think you’re going to be explaining to the cops what an embedded system is if they come to your house thirsting for your fucking head?

@zzt @Wikisteff @kyle_pegasus @rootwyrm No, not at all. I know that this is, basically, aimed at trying to eliminate anonymity online for the purposes of mass surveillance.
I'm not a lawyer, but I wonder if (at least in the us) this may give raise to a "Selective Enforcement" defense.
Also, I'm just exhausted with all of it and I'm enjoying the pedantry.

@zzt @Wikisteff @nerdpr0f @kyle_pegasus @rootwyrm After what we’ve all experienced the last 10 years or so “that’s unenforceable” should not be comforting to anyone. Something being unenforceable or totally detached from reality is not going to stop these MFs from trying to do it anyway and they will fuck up *so* many things in the attempt!

@kyle_pegasus @zzt @rootwyrm Gnome.

@MisuseCase @nerdpr0f @Wikisteff @zzt @rootwyrm @kyle_pegasus It also means they will pick who to enforce it on

@zzt IBM, Canonical, Torvalds, and Systemd Dipfuck are falling all over themselves to implement total surveillance at the kernel level. I expect by next week, grub will refuse to boot past an 'Enter your birthdate' prompt.

@rootwyrm the year is 2026 and linux on the desktop is finally an actual thing my actual dad asked for by name instead of a tired meme
the linux ecosystem is of course using this moment to comply in advance with fascism and embrace slop, ensuring it’ll become the exact operating system that was so terrible not even my dad could stand it
@zzt @rootwyrm I from some time I fear Linux is going to get eaten from inside by all these corporate interests.
Having Red Hat that dictates what is supposed "standard" was something that had to rose red flags much earlier.Maybe is time to keep warm a copy of AmigaOS in case everything goes to South badly in the coming years...

@kyle_pegasus @zzt @rootwyrm Gnome.
@soc @zzt @rootwyrm Wayland and GTK, Gnome and systemd.
Wayland kills all small desktop environments and independent window managers, funneling everyone towards Gnome, GTK forces environment-agnostic applications to become gnome specific applications via libadwaita, systemd absorbs every key service running off screen.
the end goal is basically that linux becomes an IBM controlled monolith that you're allowed to look at source code to, if you really really want

@rootwyrm @zzt @davidgerard is NTP going to be a hard requirement, now…?

@rootwyrm@weird.autos @zzt@mas.to question out of my own ignorance, if you don't mind.
Several distributions/forks are European, so if the EU were to (exceptionally) say "no thanks" to having age checks at the os level, those may be able to stay vaguely sane (at least on this topic), right? Or the distros are so interrelated that once some start caving in, they are all fucked? -

@kyle_pegasus @zzt @rootwyrm Talking to "fans" of these technologies is so fucking infuriating.
Nobody denies that the previous tech stack had problems ... but Wayland, Systemd, Flatpak and so on are not the solutions!

> Wayland kills all small desktop environments and independent window managers
that's just not true
there is wlroots, smithey, and now there is river too which is even simpler than those libraries -

@navi@social.vlhl.dev @zzt@mas.to @soc@chaos.social @rootwyrm@weird.autos @kyle_pegasus@scalie.club there's also canonical's mir; weston is also used for embedded/automotive systems apparently?
if you look deep you'll find all sorts of wlroots inspired projects
so i don't think wayland is "too complex" that it kills small / indie compositors, even if wlroots were to be archived randomly.
