    In reality, each generation just muddles along as best it can, neither moving towards nor away from anything, but just making the best (or worst) of their moment on this planet. 🫤

    p.s. Marxists aren't alone in their fantasising: (liberal) Whig historians have their Myth of Progress, techo-utopians have their triumphalist history of the "Great Men" of Science, and conservative Christian Nationalists have their racist "Great Replacement" theory.
