"Late-stage capitalism" is a clever -sounding phrase to drop into a fedipost, but it's nonsense: it implies a deterministic, teleological model of history, moving through known stages towards an inevitable goal.In reality, each generation just muddles along as best it can, neither moving towards nor away from anything, but just making the best (or worst) of their moment on this planet. 🫤#history #marxism #capitalism p.s. Marxists aren't alone in their fantasising: (liberal) Whig historians have their Myth of Progress, techo-utopians have their triumphalist history of the "Great Men" of Science, and conservative Christian Nationalists have their racist "Great Replacement" theory.

@jlou Wikipedia page on this says it best:19th-century German philosopher Karl Marx, the founder and primary theorist of Marxism, viewed religion as "the soul of soulless conditions" or the "opium of the people". He believed religion survives because of oppressive social conditions. When this oppressive and exploitative condition is destroyed, religion will become unnecessary, according to Marx. At the same time, he saw religion as a form of working-class protest against poor economic conditions and alienation. Denys Turner, a scholar of Marx and historical theology, classified Marx's views as adhering to post-theism, a philosophical position that regards worshiping deities as an eventually obsolete, but temporarily necessary, stage in humanity's historical spiritual development.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marxism_and_religion

@OrionKidder Billionaires use up a lot more ressources than the average citizen plus leave a lot more emissions and toxic stuff, including (very often) criminal behaviour.
