Another example of the mind-boggling form of construction that is excavating dwellings and objects out of a single huge rock. This time from the Kuda Buddhist caves in Maharashtra. It's not entirely clear from the photo, but the round stupa in the centre "grows out" of the floor and is connected to the ceiling. Dated to 1st century BCE.#history #architecture

Hayo just finished reading Veldgrauw: Nederlanders in de Waffen-SS by Evertjan van RoekelDutch members of the Waffen-SS were generally just put away as traitors and generally awful people. This of course is an oversimplification. This book uses diaries of members to shed some light on their actual motivations, what they went through, and how they were treated in the aftermath of the war. This book brings them down from demonspawn to regular humans, with their own (if somewhat flawed) moral compass and bad decisions. The author tries to be very factual, and places the diaries in context of what went on around the writers.
