@Fragarach gotta ask the Zorin folks. Maybe they'll keep their system clean?

@tante @Fragarach the saving grace is most of the dedicated "AI" and "agentic" features are going to be Snaps which basically everyone else ignores. So fingers crossed it will be fairly Ubuntu contained.

Microsoft kills its OS with all the copilot garbage users do not want and Canonical has to go: "Yeah, that's where we need to go."

      Strategic genius.

@tante Well to be honest, with Ubuntu it has been a gradual development for many years now.

@tante A recurring pattern I see is of FOSS devs getting drawn into LLMs in limited situations on their own time (Segar: "I've found LLMs to be an excellent learning tool"), and rapidly scaling up integration so that they're soon unavoidable — excuse me: "implicit" — in the projects they maintain.

@jcnotwit no idea but their thoughts behind the Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) all of a sudden seem quite timely:

"Its goal is to ensure Linux Mint can continue to deliver the same user experience if Ubuntu was ever to disappear. "

@iain @tante When they turn to vibecoding, sure. But integrating AI features into a project doesn't decrease workload — it's a new feature that has to be deployed and maintained. That's more work, not less.

I wish I could say I'm surprised, but I'm mostly surprised it took them this long.

It's like the whole damn IT world decided they're lemmings and suddenly need to jump off that AI cliff.

Hmm. There would probably be quite some positives in that outcome. But this period before they reach the cliff is horrible to everybody.

@iain @tante It's still more work than if they had just transitioned to vibecoding updates on the existing feature set. Maybe some devs think they can use vibecoding to expand a project while still reducing the commitments that lead to burnout, but that's hype-powered cognitive dissonance.

It's like there are no ethical corporate driven Linux distributions in capitalism.

(I've been cringing every time suse posts a generic PR message on their fedi account selling "AI" this or other).

RH is likely taking GNOME down the "AI" chute soon if it hasn't already.

@tante It's one of the main reasons why many opt for Linux Mint Debian Edition, when first introduced to #Linux.

Canonical has a long history of more-than-skirting the unethical divide.

@tante Nice to agree about something... I don't need integrated AI features (or Ubuntu) either.

Stock Debian is good, Rocky (FOSS rebuild of RHEL) is also good with overlapping 10y lifespans.

                                      Just a moment...

@hopeless redhat/rocky never clicked for me. Have been running Debian on Servers for more than 20 years now so I'll probably go that route

Okay gotta migrate off to stock Debian then I guess.
Microsoft kills its OS with all the copilot garbage users do not want and Canonical has to go: "Yeah, that's where we need to go."

                                          Strategic genius.

@tante Their hiring practices told me the whole project would crash and burn at some point years ago.
