    @sundogplanets Had a manager once who used to be a farmer in Sweden, during any 'situation' at work he was fond of saying "don't worry, the cow isn't on the ice”. Probably a big concern for a Swedish dairy farmer, cows falling through thin ice..

      @joat @sundogplanets right?!

      The broad Scots version also works for that.

        @sundogplanets not cows but oxen. “Inutile chiudere la stalla quando i buoi sono scappati” that's "It's pointless to close the barn door after the oxen have escaped". Meaning: it's useless to fix a problem when it's already too late and there's nothing left to do.

          @brunogirin @sundogplanets I’ve read it in English as “like a cow pissing on a flat rock.”

          Interesting. I'm not sold on the flat rock bit. As someone from Brittany who has experienced the phenomenon many times, I understand it as a continuous high speed stream of water, sometimes at an angle, that can last for hours.

              Apparently there's a motive since classical literature, of a pig distributing the parts of its body through its last will. (Whether that's directly related to this song sounds like a different matter.)

                  @sundogplanets "Je moet geen oude koeien uit de sloot halen," Rough translation: don't rescue an old cow from a ditch.

                  Basically it means that you should not bring up old grievances in current discussions.

                  @sundogplanets Another fun one: "Je weet nooit hoe een koe een haas vangt". Literal translation: you never know how a cow might catch a hare. It means that you should never assume that a problem is unsolvable.

                      @sundogplanets in spanish we say "el que se quema con leche, ve la vaca y llora"... which would be something along this "He who gets burned by milk, sees the cow and cries"

                            @anna I'm getting a feeling that cows may be kinda important to the Dutch. 🙂

                            In Hindi, "come bull, hit me" is how you say "asking for trouble", and there's another saying that translates to "whose stick, their buffalo".

                            @amenonsen That's one of the things I remember from reading Hoe Ik Talent Voor Het Leven Kreeg ("How I got a talent for life"), by Rodaan Al Galidi. If I remember correctly, the main character only knows one thing about the Netherlands before arriving there as a refugee: that Dutch cows are the ones that produce the most milk. For some reason that little thing really stuck with me.

                                          For no reason at all, please give me your favourite cow-related figures of speech! (Stuff like "No use crying over spilled milk" or "until the cows come home", puns extremely welcome)

                                          @sundogplanets While on road trips with the kids, I have (too many times) dad-joked when I see some cows “outstanding in their field”
