Overheard two teenagers outside the library today discussing a low-end electric guitar they were passing back and forth to each other. (I didn't catch the make; some sort of strat copy smothered in stickers.) But what caught my ears was the seller saying:
"Sick, yeah. It's just not for me, so I'm moving on to vinyl. But this thing is a monster. Every string works, and it has that amp aux port there if you want it louder."
Recalling I, too, was once at that tender age—I just kept my mouth shut and crossed the street when the light changed.
But from now on I might refer to all output jacks as aux ports.
@geoffduncan I was more impressed with "every string works"

@geoffduncan
Should have asked if it was USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt 2, Thunderbolt 3, USB-C or Thunderbolt 5.

No, man, it's OG, like for those big headphones or something.As I was walking back home a *very* large number of possible replies and ways to insert myself into that conversation went through my head—I'm not sure they were all winners, but maybe a couple were!
However, I'm glad I stayed out of it. There's a kid interested enough in music that he's trying to buy a guitar, probably off a classmate or from an offer he found on insta or tiktok. I remember being that kid (minus the smartphone). If an adult had tried to insert themselves into that transaction—even in a tremendously cool, well-meaning way—it would have derailed me for a while, maybe forever.
So: instead, I hope that kid kicks my ass on guitar one day.

I was in a situation where someone asked for an Ox Cord.
After some back and forth I finally figured out, oh, you need a cable with an eighth inch stereo plug? On both ends? Or..?
The situation you described would have been more confusing.

@Chancerubbage
I occasionally work with an younger engineer who's first language is Vietnamese, second language is Mandarin, and third language is English—which he learned in China, so in his mind English kind of first translates to Chinese, then to Vietnamese, and the process reverses on the way out. He's great.Anyway: a couple years ago we had a really funny moment with "aux" buses (which he was refering to collectively as "oxen") and confusion over the Universal Audio "Ox" box (which is a high-end reactive load/IR/etc. system for guitar amps.) Eighth-inch stereo connectors never game up, though: feels like a missed opportunity.
