I work in mysterious ways (by that I mean squinting really hard until I know I got the right color)

Seems like some of it is skill at using the controls. I was expecting it to be choosing from a line up.

@kottke Pantone has built an industry in this.
I'd say "monopoly", but I know it's not (despite their attempts). A different colour reference system (the Munsell system, looking like "10YR 3/4" etc) was chosen for rock descriptions in the 1930s, and isn't going anywhere this Myr.
