@kottke Pantone has built an industry in this.
I'd say "monopoly", but I know it's not (despite their attempts). A different colour reference system (the Munsell system, looking like "10YR 3/4" etc) was chosen for rock descriptions in the 1930s, and isn't going anywhere this Myr.

@kottke 47.05/50 I just like colours... I think that knowing different names besides the basic ones helps because I could articulate in my head what colour I was looking at.

@kottke so, I used to look after TV cameras for a living. Whilst I know about the lack of objective colorimetry we have, we can learn some stuff. The way you do this with cameras is to have a preview switch in the remote control panel that allows you to directly bounce between them, and adjust colours on the fly. I retired in 2020, so I guess I'm out of practice!
