@kawunngg @futurebird @DamonWakes @btrinen “What? This mountain wasn’t there yesterday. And what’s that smell?”
@david @kawunngg @futurebird @btrinen Let's not be too quick to dump on a potential green alternative to the Haber process. It's free* fertiliser, after all.
*ignoring whatever it takes to power the mad science ray

@andrewg @futurebird I had considered the logistics nightmare of food, but not water. I live near a LOT of very clean fresh water.
None of us are mentioning managing the *output* of a 100x human....
@SomeVeganCheeseIsOk @futurebird unless you happen to be *way* out in the sticks, a 200m tall human would be a godzilla-level disaster

You had to put “dump” in there.

@david @kawunngg @futurebird @btrinen It was that or "pooh-pooh."

A mad scientist has a shrink/grow ray and you will be hit with it. You will either be 100 times larger (200 m tall) or 100 times smaller (2 cm tall) for one week.
Because of movie logic you will not die or suffer any huge health impacts, but you must make it through the week.
Do you go big? Or do you go small?
How will you spend your week?
@futurebird larger, because I would use the opportunity to go travelling. It would be tricky not stepping on people / things, but imagine just being able to walk a while to take a look at interesting landmarks in neighbouring countries...

@futurebird I mean, just an issue of how quick you die depending on which you go with, right? A week is a long time to be either incredibly big for anything or incredibly small for a person and while your chances of survival go up immensely being big compared to being small you're still a giant naked human and will not make it out unharmed unless you're exceptionally good at hiding somehow and can survive underwater as there's not many places to hide on land.

i think movie logic is split on whether your clothes also shrink or grow unfortunately. smaller at least means you won't be carefully stepping around tabloid reporters all day.

@futurebird Small, hands down. Of course it is a lot more dangerous in case I encounter pets, spiders or whatever. Probably I can't go out, and finding food and water won't be easy – but a cube of sugar would be enough for the week. On the plus side, I'd be quite strong.
I think large is worse. I'd need 1.000.000 times as much food (2.000 tons of water a day!), I'd have an awfully hard time getting around (being very, very weak) – and e.g. powerlines would still be deadly, probably. -

I'd have to go larger because I am already quite scared of insects and similar. If I met them when being that small - nope!!

I came across this as a kid and loved it.

If you go large people will seem like insects. Squirrels will seem like mites!
SO IDK. maybe small is better.

But they won't look like insects! The problem is reading sci-fi stories as a kid where the aliens were bug (generic use rather than scientific) shaped.
The thought of meeting an insect the same size as me just chills me to my bones
-
Are the ants communist?
@futurebird IIRC they were just ants. The entomology seemed pretty well researched. Early on the protagonist mcgyvered a crossbow out of disassembled insects, with nettle and later wasp venom for stopping power.
-
Are the ants communist?
@futurebird The Cold War bit came later: they get sent on a secret mission to find out what the Russian miniaturisation programme is up to.
-
Imagine eating single part of a raspberry like an apple!
Having a slice of boba with a tiny dot of whipped cream on it!
@futurebird yeah, I was going to say gorging on little wild strawberries
-
@SomeVeganCheeseIsOk @futurebird nah, you'd be in the next country or out to sea by the time they got their shit together. I've seen lots of monster movies, I'm pretty sure I could wreak a LOT of havoc before they put me down!
@akamran @SomeVeganCheeseIsOk @futurebird Especially when you consider, in the old #Godzilla movies, the military frequently **lost track of Godzilla** ... while he was ashore!!

@joejoetom @SomeVeganCheeseIsOk @futurebird right?! Like, kaiju don't exactly have a stealth mode!

@futurebird I read The Men in the Walls by William Tenn. I'll be alright as a 2 cm miniature, on the condition I retain the same number of brain cells (I read Fantastic Voyage by Isaac Asimov as well
).
