@glitzersachen @futurebird this is why I would have a knife and a shield and an accompanying spouse. I am genuinely not afraid of the local wildlife.

OK. Were the equipment and the spouse in the conditions? Will the spuse have been shrunk as well?

A mad scientist has a shrink/grow ray and you will be hit with it. You will either be 100 times larger (200 m tall) or 100 times smaller (2 cm tall) for one week.

Because of movie logic you will not die or suffer any huge health impacts, but you must make it through the week.

Do you go big? Or do you go small?

How will you spend your week?

      @futurebird

I live in an old apartment building. I know what also lurks in the shadows there.

100 times bigger, even though it wouldn't be my favorite choice. I can find fresh water, and not eat for a week.

@glitzersachen @futurebird spouse is normal sized. A bit of wire will make a decent sword. A bottle cap will make a nice shield. Spouse brings 2cm me outside, puts me on some moss or lichen. I get the best views of a moss ecosystem ever. WIN.

I have to nitpick. This would be a club.

@david @kawunngg @futurebird @btrinen Let's not be too quick to dump on a potential green alternative to the Haber process. It's free* fertiliser, after all.

@andrewg @futurebird I had considered the logistics nightmare of food, but not water. I live near a LOT of very clean fresh water.

None of us are mentioning managing the *output* of a 100x human....

@SomeVeganCheeseIsOk @futurebird unless you happen to be *way* out in the sticks, a 200m tall human would be a godzilla-level disaster

@futurebird larger, because I would use the opportunity to go travelling. It would be tricky not stepping on people / things, but imagine just being able to walk a while to take a look at interesting landmarks in neighbouring countries...

@futurebird I mean, just an issue of how quick you die depending on which you go with, right? A week is a long time to be either incredibly big for anything or incredibly small for a person and while your chances of survival go up immensely being big compared to being small you're still a giant naked human and will not make it out unharmed unless you're exceptionally good at hiding somehow and can survive underwater as there's not many places to hide on land.

i think movie logic is split on whether your clothes also shrink or grow unfortunately. smaller at least means you won't be carefully stepping around tabloid reporters all day.

@futurebird Small, hands down. Of course it is a lot more dangerous in case I encounter pets, spiders or whatever. Probably I can't go out, and finding food and water won't be easy – but a cube of sugar would be enough for the week. On the plus side, I'd be quite strong.
I think large is worse. I'd need 1.000.000 times as much food (2.000 tons of water a day!), I'd have an awfully hard time getting around (being very, very weak) – and e.g. powerlines would still be deadly, probably.

But they won't look like insects! The problem is reading sci-fi stories as a kid where the aliens were bug (generic use rather than scientific) shaped.

The thought of meeting an insect the same size as me just chills me to my bones

@futurebird IIRC they were just ants. The entomology seemed pretty well researched. Early on the protagonist mcgyvered a crossbow out of disassembled insects, with nettle and later wasp venom for stopping power.
