@schratze There's a pretty strong and visible filter bubble effect on fedi. Like, there's a shitload of Linux πŸ™„ and IRL they're less than 1% of computer users and less than 0.1% of people in general. I have for years been wondering why MS/Windows developers don't exist in most online spaces. I'd have an easier time finding a Haiku than a Windows dev here.

And the same applies to politics. The very few auth-right visible here are trolls, because we block all their instances.

@schratze Not all of those are Nazis; I'd guess less than 1/3 of auth-right are actually white supremacist christfuckers. The rest are just your old relatives who tell racist jokes on f*c*book, or that guy who hasn't left the farm in 20 years, thinks Taco Bell is illegal immigrants.

@schratze That's what I'm pointing at, they're not fascists, just further in that direction. If you filter bubble, you'll never hear the less-shitty ideas they have about not blowing all tax money.

And they don't see any contradiction to their views, never see a single black or gay person treated respectfully. So the filter gets stronger and they get pushed further right.

@schratze Yes, this. I don't need to engage with right-wingers and assorted other wronguns here. Their opinions are already everywhere (and affect everything) around me in this society, and drown out perspectives that I'd be less likely to hear if I wasn't insulated on a well-moderated instance.

More signal & less noise seems like the opposite of a problem to me.

@schratze at this point it feels like in most cases even if you ignore the contents of whatever take they're trying to express, just by using specific phrases like "echo chamber" "shoving [x] down my throat" "touting/evangelism" "thought police", they out themselves as someone who is very likely to have shitty takes

it's just an instant "okay I see where this is going"

@matrixsasuke @schratze so you're saying we must listen to fascists or they will spill our blood? I don't think those are the only two options, no. They can shut the hell up or we'd punch their faces. Those are two more options.

@alexisvl@cathode.church @schratze which is clearly why they're never happy with Parler, Truth Social, or whatever else. They don't want to speak freely to a bunch of people who agree, they want to tie everyone else up and force them to listen.

@schratze Nazis don't provide information anyway. They provide noise. They "flood the zone with shit," in their (Bannon's) own words. It's kind of definitional to Nazis, really. And noise, obviously, effectively cancels out information - it drowns it out. So, yeah. "Information bubble."
