@Nickiquote Trent Reznor's Diner Starchfuckers
@nixanadoo The thing to remember here is this is basically poverty food. It is a filling lunch a child can buy with their change. It is typically cheaper than just a single portion of chips.

I was involuntarily listening to two old ladies talking loudly to each other the other day. One, to the astonishment of the other, said she had never had a chip butty.
Being a true man of the world, I have had many chip butties in my time.
FYI, if needed, a chip butty is chips (ie french fries, NOT crisps) sandwiched between bread slices or in a bap/bun. Arguably it should be buttered, but we will ignore that for the purposes of the following poll:
Q. HAVE YOU EVER EATEN A CHIP BUTTY?
@Nickiquote I picked no-UK because I am half English. And I certainly would’ve had the opportunity when I lived in the UK for a few years, but I actually never did.

@Nickiquote @bigvimto I am carb curious.

@Nickiquote that makes sense!

Would recommend, but it's possible that a lot of that is nostalgia

@Nickiquote I am a culturally impoverished USian who has never had nor even heard of such a thing but now that I know they exist, I need one.

@Nickiquote I had trouble believing they were a thing. Then one day I saw them on a pub menu (down south, this was, not oop t'north where such things were rumoured to exist).
Me, wanting to find out whether this was a genuine menu item or a joke: "Do you really sell chip butties?"
Barmaid: "Sorry luv, last orders for food were ten minutes ago."

In California we do taters in a flour tortilla, soft-taco-style, with a smear of tart cream.

@Nickiquote I've heard that it's supposed to be a single slice of buttered bread, folded over the chips

Oh, yeah, and there are fries (sorry, sorry, "chips") in French tacos*, too.
*French tacos are not tacos, although they are called that in French. Meat (originally donair), cheese sauce, and chips wrapped in a flour tortilla like a burrito, then press-grilled like panini.

Unsure - rest of world
I remember some kids at school eating them, if I ever did, I clearly wasn't impressed enough to do it again.

@bigvimto @Nickiquote I’m thinking smashed garlic potatoes on toasted sourdough with a bit of crumbled Feta could be an amazing snack.

@Nickiquote Chippy where I grew up sold a 'bucket of chips - a half loaf with the crumb scooped out, and full of chips. Lush. And optional gravy! (South Wales Valleys). Now, further west, many (most?) chippies have chip butties on the menu. Totally normal!

@Nickiquote The key to a good chip barm is mushy peas.

Oh yes, a pie barm is a thing of beauty

@ambientspace @Nickiquote That does sound tasty, but is much more high-brow than a chip barm. Cheap white bread (sliced or roll/barm), chips, salt and vinegar, sauce if you're nasty. For a bit of extra crunch you can get scraps on there too - the little bits of batter that have fallen to the bottom of the heated display unit in the chippy.

@Nickiquote Chip butties disgust me, I'd rather have a macaroni cheese pie if I seek the early coronary.

@Nickiquote I've had something like this before. What we do is put some lunch meat, cheese, some mayonaise maybe and some mustard, then some chips on a sandwich. Not sure if this counts as a chip buddy, but it's instantly what I thought of when you described it.

@Nickiquote Is this the origin of the Mumbai vada pav? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vada_pav
