I was involuntarily listening to two old ladies talking loudly to each other the other day. One, to the astonishment of the other, said she had never had a chip butty.

Being a true man of the world, I have had many chip butties in my time.

FYI, if needed, a chip butty is chips (ie french fries, NOT crisps) sandwiched between bread slices or in a bap/bun. Arguably it should be buttered, but we will ignore that for the purposes of the following poll:

    Q. HAVE YOU EVER EATEN A CHIP BUTTY?

@Nickiquote so a potato sandwich? Even with butter that seems very starchy.

However, in the absence of a chip buttie, a crisp sandwich will get you through.

I have, late at night and very intoxicated at a Burger King, carefully stacked the entire bag of fries inside my hamburger before eating it. So it was fries between buns. Does that count?

@worldwidewerner If there hadn’t been a burger patty in there, yes. What you had was arguably still primarily a burger, but I will leave it to your conscience to decide.

@nixanadoo The thing to remember here is this is basically poverty food. It is a filling lunch a child can buy with their change. It is typically cheaper than just a single portion of chips.

@Nickiquote I picked no-UK because I am half English. And I certainly would’ve had the opportunity when I lived in the UK for a few years, but I actually never did.

@Nickiquote I had trouble believing they were a thing. Then one day I saw them on a pub menu (down south, this was, not oop t'north where such things were rumoured to exist).

Me, wanting to find out whether this was a genuine menu item or a joke: "Do you really sell chip butties?"

Barmaid: "Sorry luv, last orders for food were ten minutes ago."

In California we do taters in a flour tortilla, soft-taco-style, with a smear of tart cream.

Oh, yeah, and there are fries (sorry, sorry, "chips") in French tacos*, too.

*French tacos are not tacos, although they are called that in French. Meat (originally donair), cheese sauce, and chips wrapped in a flour tortilla like a burrito, then press-grilled like panini.

                                      Unsure - rest of world

I remember some kids at school eating them, if I ever did, I clearly wasn't impressed enough to do it again. 🤷‍♂️

Would recommend, but it's possible that a lot of that is nostalgia

@bigvimto @Nickiquote I’m thinking smashed garlic potatoes on toasted sourdough with a bit of crumbled Feta could be an amazing snack.

@Nickiquote Chippy where I grew up sold a 'bucket of chips - a half loaf with the crumb scooped out, and full of chips. Lush. And optional gravy! (South Wales Valleys). Now, further west, many (most?) chippies have chip butties on the menu. Totally normal!
