I don’t know who needs to see this, but if you’re hungering for #UrbanFantasy, Juno Dawson’s amazing books are sitting right there. #Witches using #GirlPower to fight transphobes & the patriarchy. #A24 just needs to have her adapt them, license some Spice Girls tunes, & they’ll have a winning #movie “quadrilogy”.

      @verge

You'd think she could afford to make-up a whole different story to tell.
Or maybe it's a way to retro-cram more JK bad-ideas into work that she now wants to use to directly manipulate malleable minds in-service to the greater fascist and hate machines.

Shit, man. I still don't want Star Wars prequels or Road House remake. Not from a quality or nostalgia angle either. Just tell new stories is all. Retro retellings are the laziest kind of work from assholes who can afford to give-up.

@GGMcBG @verge Yeah but when she tried to make new "mature" stories, no one wanted to read them, that's the thing.

@verge I agree of course, but I would start with more fundamental issues like genocide of thousands of children in Palestine and that there is no ethical consumption of any services that are providing assistance to Israel to murder those civilians (almost entire BigTech etc.)

The key difference is that it's quite difficult for most people to avoid big tech entirely, since most employers and even many governments require you to have a Google, Apple, or Microsoft account. On the other hand, it's pretty easy to just not watch any HBO shows, with comparatively few situations where you might "have" to (if you're a professional film critic, or if you're a kid and your parents are trying to make you watch it for some reason.)

@agowa338 I’ve read the room, and the room I’m in tells me ”jokes” about violence against trans people are exactly what we don’t need right now.

And any good artist can recognize where the lines stop in their art.
She told her story, made many, many, manymanymanymany millions. It will carry forever.
It's time to stop and let others tell new stories.

Unless its purpose now is to become something more than it was.
              And what will that be?
In any case, fuck that. It's just another story about a magic baby. We've been here and beat this rocking-horsie to death.

@verge Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water. Harry Potter is a delight and kids can enjoy every minute of them.
JK has views most progressive thinkers don’t agree with but then Charles Dickens abhorred poverty but seemed fine with slavery. Each of us has choices to make. She has to live with herself. We can live without.

@ddetmer @verge Dickens may have had racist tendencies, but he consistently wrote against slavery.

                  He's also long dead.

@art_codesmith @GGMcBG @verge if only that were true, Robert's Strike series seems to do ‘well enough’, and the BBC has kept adapting them just about as fast as can write 'em — with by no means small viewing figures.

@zbrown @verge Sorry possibly so. I meant the comparison that we don’t know enough about any writer to say whether they agreed with our own beliefs. To judge JK because of things she says are hers …well I just think HP is a great kids book series. I apologize if I defamed Dickens. I don’t like Tom Cruise because of his behavior and beliefs which aren’t mine but Top Gun is still a great movie.

@ddetmer @verge see but the problem is it isn't a simple matter of unsavoury ‘beliefs’, JKR is trying — largely succeeding — to enforce her worldview on us all, and openly boasts of using her HP income to do so.

Perhaps if she like Dickens were dead we could view HP much as we do Roald Dahl's stories: fun books for kids, at least when lightly edited.

But she's very much alive and kicking, and making the lives of millions worse.

@zbrown @verge I’m sorry for her rhetoric having impacted your life. These are turbulent times with multiple factions tearing down rights we previously had. I get that. I no longer have rights to my own body anymore. That results from mostly rich white men having more control over my body through laws they pass. I get repercussions from small minds carry huge consequences. I’m sorry again for your loses. I guess I just know that it will turn again. We will turn it again. Believe.

@dm29 @ariaflame @jaredwhite @verge Japan is producing public and commercial content some people consider CP. Is consuming that now ethical or not?

@dm29 @jaredwhite @verge I still think you're not realizing your mistake. Like how is, for example, consuming CP not unethical? Are you sure you don't mean "nothing can be ethical," if the viewer understands the implications?

@koh_kun @dm29 @jaredwhite @verge If you are working for the FBI and have to "consume" the CP to find out who is depicted and where it takes place so the victim can be helped and the perpetrator is caught - I guess that would be ethical. Poor people who have to do that though, I heard this is one of the most psychologically damaging jobs there is.

But everything has to be seen in context.
