@GGMcBG @verge Yeah but when she tried to make new "mature" stories, no one wanted to read them, that's the thing.

@art_codesmith @GGMcBG @verge if only that were true, Robert's Strike series seems to do ‘well enough’, and the BBC has kept adapting them just about as fast as can write 'em — with by no means small viewing figures.

@verge I'll decide what is ethical for me to consume. But hey, thanks Verge for being the world police.

@dm29 @jaredwhite @verge You didn't specify that. You said no consumption could be unethical.

@ddetmer @verge Dickens may have had racist tendencies, but he consistently wrote against slavery.

          He's also long dead.

@zbrown @verge Sorry possibly so. I meant the comparison that we don’t know enough about any writer to say whether they agreed with our own beliefs. To judge JK because of things she says are hers …well I just think HP is a great kids book series. I apologize if I defamed Dickens. I don’t like Tom Cruise because of his behavior and beliefs which aren’t mine but Top Gun is still a great movie.

@ddetmer @verge see but the problem is it isn't a simple matter of unsavoury ‘beliefs’, JKR is trying — largely succeeding — to enforce her worldview on us all, and openly boasts of using her HP income to do so.

Perhaps if she like Dickens were dead we could view HP much as we do Roald Dahl's stories: fun books for kids, at least when lightly edited.

But she's very much alive and kicking, and making the lives of millions worse.

@zbrown @verge She’s disappointed most of her fans and she’s rich enough to not give a 💩. I get it. But there are more than enough people who want to destroy our country democracy planet 🌎
Most of those people are doing more damage than JK could ever do.
I think we put her on a pedestal. We loved her rags to riches story writing in the fish and chip shops and stuff like that. Wanted her to be better and she isn’t. She’s shallow minded and self centered. That’s her life. Not ours

@ddetmer @verge not to be self-centred but *my* life is actively worse because of her, I've lost rights from her direct personal actions, she's not an island, it doesn't make sense to dismiss it as simply ‘her life’.

@zbrown @verge I’m sorry for her rhetoric having impacted your life. These are turbulent times with multiple factions tearing down rights we previously had. I get that. I no longer have rights to my own body anymore. That results from mostly rich white men having more control over my body through laws they pass. I get repercussions from small minds carry huge consequences. I’m sorry again for your loses. I guess I just know that it will turn again. We will turn it again. Believe.

@dm29 @jaredwhite @verge I still think you're not realizing your mistake. Like how is, for example, consuming CP not unethical? Are you sure you don't mean "nothing can be ethical," if the viewer understands the implications?

@koh_kun @dm29 @jaredwhite @verge If you are working for the FBI and have to "consume" the CP to find out who is depicted and where it takes place so the victim can be helped and the perpetrator is caught - I guess that would be ethical. Poor people who have to do that though, I heard this is one of the most psychologically damaging jobs there is.

But everything has to be seen in context.

                            @verge Fun Q: why?

                            - Typically when a work is turned into a series, this is the ultimate move to ruin it forever. Guess that is good here?

                            - If the reason is that she gets money per (estimated) viewer, does that make piracy good?

                            - Given the above setting very low expectations, does that make it ethical to watch it as a bad example? You know, like watching the bottom IMDB movies for laughs?

Personally I fail to see how anyone would want to watch it, fan or not, though.

@verge I think this series will split mastodon. Probably for the same reasons that American leftists (Dems) get split. Half of the crowd wants to keep marching for parity among all, which requires championing anyone made “other”. Half of the crowd wants to think of themself as a wizard who takes unusually good cat photos.

Harry Potter adults experienced most of their adulthood in a semblance of left leaning democracy, so they think it is their right AND a natural state. Reality is anathema.

J.K. Rowling has made it abundantly clear that she will continue using her fortune to harm [transgender] people." (typo in lede)

I can only hope that HBO pays the cast and crew, sees each episode downloaded once, and everyone else just shares that copy.

It's not legal nor ethical, though perhaps somewhat less unethical.

                                  @verge I disagree.

It's certainly true that JK Rowling has her ideas about transgender people and what not.

But remember that a video game, called Hogwarts Legacy, has a transgender woman among its characters. Not important to the plot, or relevant in the grand scheme of things, but still there she is, and she has some side quests to give to us.

And, if Severus Snape is played by a black actor in that new series... what other surprises are being hidden?

@dm29 @jaredwhite @verge as is the case with Rowling’s revenue from her works getting funneled into anti-trans movements at a time when governmental efforts are also turned toward anti-trans oppression. People must push back any way they can when civil rights are being eroded, and that should involve shaming of others for contributing to that harm.

@WhiteCatTamer @dm29 @jaredwhite @verge Now this raises an interesting question. Will more money be funnelled into anti-trans movements by buying a book by a _British_ author (as evil as she may be), or by buying literally anything from a US company and thereby causing US taxes to be paid?

Of course, even better would be buying _none_ of that. But given the context is a US TV station, the person this is about is in the US, so one should actually think how to use money in a way to least benefit the Insane Trumpists.

@MeimeiTakuto @verge Show her that you can separate the work from its author.

By pirating it and giving her no money at all...

@verge Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water. Harry Potter is a delight and kids can enjoy every minute of them.
JK has views most progressive thinkers don’t agree with but then Charles Dickens abhorred poverty but seemed fine with slavery. Each of us has choices to make. She has to live with herself. We can live without.

@ddetmer @verge I disagree with it being a great kids book series primarily because of the pacing of the books. You just can't say that the ideal age to enjoy books 1 and 7 are the same. As such, if you start with book 1, expect them to read book 7 a month later. Which requires artificially delaying the first book until the kids likely have grown out of it, or being _extremely_ patient in dealing with "when can I finally have the next book?"...

This issue did not exist with the original releases, as they were also released with release dates matching the expected reading age progression.

I also heard (have not confirmed yet, but will) that most of the themes in her book were, to put it mildly, greatly influenced by other works, which in turn implies, whoever likes HP may also like quite some of those. Now I do not know the political views of those authors either, but there definitely are other works available which may or may not be better.

@shadowbottle @verge @gedeonm Given the mere fact they're turning it into a series shows it is all about just milking the same cash cow even more - looks like it already starts meeting expectations...
