US troops are not in Germany to protect Germany. They’re there because the US needs bases to conduct operations beyond the North American continent. If Trump withdraws them, he will harm the United States, not Germany.

It’s absurd how many Americans fail to grasp this.

@Strandjunker If you're ever wondering about Trump's motives, just ask yourself "what would Putin do?". But currently Russia can't even beat Ukraine, and they'd be no match for Europe, with or without the U.S. #agent_krasnov

That might be THE logistics base to support operations in the mid-East if Al Udeid is all shot to Hell.

@kdwarn Eh, with one caveat. The USA did pursue some imperialist practices pre world war one, but we'd largely ended those practices by 1908. (Might have been 1912. Forgive my aging memory) It was more of a 'we did it because everyone was doing it' sort of geopolitical thing. EG the international 'norm' Once we'd decided we were going to encourage/endorse ending of colonialism practices globally we abandoned those overtones at the policy level.

If it happens gradually it is even good for Europe.
There are a lot if folks, including me, that don't want to be dependent on any other countries outside Europe. So Trump is actually doing us a favor.

@baglava @Strandjunker Well it's taken Putin about 4 years to march 250km into Ukraine.

At that rate, we can expect him in Lisbon sometime in 2090.

Do we think he'll still be alive in 64 years?

@Strandjunker Oh, don't worry: The Germans don't grasp it either. In the news they had quite a large bullshit bingo why this is bad for Germany (something about economy, maintaining workplaces, other foo).

Shifting the view to "having soldier from someone who might be your enemy tomorrow already in your land" is way to complex to get. They really do believe in dangers to "the economy".... 🙄️

@jesterchen @Strandjunker that's why it is such an endeavor to #UnplugTrump for so many Germans.

@Strandjunker 100% agreed. Although, when in fall last year several countries pulled their diplomats from IRN war already was implicated & the possibility openly discussed. Strategically USA pulling military out of GER does have advantages specifically for GER aside from a little financial loss. I'm very much interested though, where they are placed next & what the implications are. What puzzles me is Felon 47 pushing EU to gear up & finding new strength & allies.

@Strandjunker Americans just know as little from European countries as Europeans know about States in America.

And about those 5000 troops... He probably send that many to Germany to prepare for the Irak war, making it definitely a non-issue.

@vosje62 @Strandjunker the USa military has been placed in GER in 1945. Since 1985 the numbers of 250 000 troops have been continously fluctuating but generally reduced to currently < 40 000. Pulling 5 000 only has a little financial impact on GER no other impact at all. It is interesting though where these troops are going to.

@aiuto @Strandjunker Not even close. The other two interested & capable contenders for 'world leader' are Russia & China. Whatever your beef is with the USA, you're not going to see a better world order emerge under either of them. Quite the opposite, in fact. We'd see imperialism re-embraced & nuclear enabled. Only a complete moron would see that as preferable.

Neither Russia nor China are empires, to go back to your earlier point. I'm trying to work out why you say the USA isn't an empire while Russia and China engage in imperialism.
I've always assumed that when people call USA 'Empire', that they're making the same sort of analogy as you are with PLC and RF.
