    Yesterday we told you about Jolla appearing on Viiden Jälkeen by Finnish national TV channel MTV. Today they published the full story! 🎉

    MTV wrote about digital sovereignty and whether a Finnish mobile operating system could be the European alternative (article in Finnish 🇫🇮). There are only four mobile operating systems in the world: two American, one Chinese — and Sailfish OS. The only truly European one.

      @skersis @jolla Its European. Finnland is European. RuSSia has nothing to do with that.

        @Hummel @jolla
        Do you think it is suitable for:
        government phones,
        the military,
        intelligence,
        critical infrastructure,
        communications among high-ranking officials?
        Why?

              @jolla the only thing that is private and safe is free software, the matter is not companies registered here or there. until the code is open and free for distribution and modification - it is not safe and reliable.

                @ItsePerkele
                Jolla raises concerns because its Sailfish OS was previously used in Russian government projects and supported by state-linked investors. Even if those ties were later cut, it still raises questions about trust and security.

                        "four mobile operating systems in the world" not counting UBPorts, PostmarketOS, Mobian, Maemo Leste, and of course KaiOS, which has shipped more units than Sailfish despite the latter's five-year head start

                          @kallekn @skersis @jolla Just Google for it. They have been partially owned by Russian company which was 45% state owned but I hear that after invasion on Ukraine they’ve managed to resolve this issue and got out of this awkward situation?
                          It would be best though if Jolla would clarify themself the current status and ownership.

                            1. KaiOS is made for Feature Phones. Jolla is focused in Smartphones.
                            2. KaiOS is almost dead

                            The Linux alternatives you mentioned are nothing you could as daily driver.

                              1. KaiOS is not noticeably less 'smart' than Jolla. They've chosen to aim downmarket, but that is not a technical limitation.
                              2. Sailfish is also 'almost dead.' Jolla isn't even a company any more, just a brand name rescued from the flames of Rostelecom investment. It's a series of Kickstarter projects with mixed results.

                              Having used Sailfish and also literally all of the alternatives I mentioned, several of them (particularly UBPorts and PostmarketOS) are at least as good as Sailfish. An ancient Oneplus 6 running Phosh on PostmarketOS is a better successor to the Nokia N9 than anything Jollyboys has in the hopper.

                                KaiOS runs on outdated software and almost every remaining useful app is a web app. There are barely any new phones.

                                "Jolla is almost dead" 10k+ pre-orders for the most recent phone after the C2 . And if "Kickstarter with mixed results" kills Jolla's credibility, what does that say about PostmarketOS, which has no company, no employees, no hardware program and no revenue?

                                  Still not sure how "barely any new phones" differentiates Sailfish and KaiOS.

                                  10k pre-orders is meaningless noise in the mobile market. It's a rounding error.

                                  Having no company, no employees, no hardware program, and no revenue is a hell of a lot better than having a company, employees, hardware program, and revenue, and no resulting advantage, and a previous failed company.

                                  I would love to live in a world where Sailfish is a major player. They have demonstrated for over a decade that they cannot achieve that goal.

                                      @mfom @jolla I tried to look option from the website, but unfortunately only Finnish. Best bet is to use some translator like DeepL and copy-paste the text

                                        When can I finalise my order? Its been quite some time to get a response going. Are you even alive or is your firm 100% bot operated??

                                        @RWvanLeeuwen @jolla Check the forum, they updated regularly there. Short answer, depends a lot in which batch you are in. Doesn't help that there are ton of people DDoS their email. Patience is needed here

                                          Jolla raises concerns because its Sailfish OS was previously used in Russian government projects and supported by state-linked investors. Even if those ties were later cut, it still raises questions about trust and security.

                                          @skersis @ItsePerkele Doesn't really raise concerns, I don't see any reason not to use the OS in critical places. Most parts outside of UI components are open source, anyone can check themselves.

                                          What Jolla did in Ruzzia was to make a fork of their operating system and customisation to that for Ruzzian government needs. Even if state linked investor owner ~20% at their peak, it doesn't put Jolla in risk. Dev tasks of actual OS stayed whole time in Finland. Jolla started to leavy Rus in 2021
