Today the European Commission is publishing the #PassengerPackage - legislation to fix railway ticketing
-
@jon What's the purpose of an embargo on cases like this?

@hans_zelf so press know what the Commissioner will say today, before he says it.

@jon Ah, I thought the plan was already presented to the commission.

@hans_zelf No. Lunchtime today. I only have odds and ends leaked so far.

@tomtom Yes. But not this time. Really.
@jon @tomtom which of the national governments are the driving force behind radical change? It feels like we have some influential govs that don't like to spend on their state rail (Deutsche Bahn), and some that really never wantes to make it easy for people to buy tickets (SNCF), and some that really try to avoid playing nicely with their neighbors. I do get why you're nervous, just surprised improvements in cross-border ticketing are actually happening!

@funkylab @tomtom There is a broad consensus for change, overall - we want to make cross border rail travel easier. The starting point for the reform was the previous German government actually, who pushed von der Leyen on this point. But when it comes to the details, the Member States are all over the place, and each have their own problems.

Overall my fear about #PassengerPackage is this: the Commission is going to propose something both radical and far reaching, but I fear also unworkable.
Overall this morning: I’m nervous.
Live stream due to start at 11:45 when Transport Commissioner Tzitzikostas is due to present the proposals https://audiovisual.ec.europa.eu/en/ebs/grid?ebs=yes&ebsplus=yes&date=20260513 #PassengerPackage

@notsoloud That is my hope, yes. But I am not sure they really thought it that way here. @funkylab @tomtom

I know two of the three legal texts of the #PassengerPackage will be numbered COM(2026) 231 and COM(2026) 232. The third one, I don't know.
Just in case when - as is normal - the Commission bla bla comms page about the proposal goes live and then they don't link to the legal proposals, and you need to dig elsewhere.

@jon At least the swedish article you linked is just a commenting article, it has no truths in it, just guesswork from the journalists side spiced up with some quotes from related people.
Holding thumbs for something good that is workable.

@jon@gruene.social the "One journey, one ticket" headline that's visible on the stream is certainly not inspiring confidence

@eq It's not guesswork. That journalist knows what's coming. Trust me, I have seen pieces from journalists that don't! I have the leaks too.

Here's my take on the #PassengerPackage
"How the gospel - the Political Guidelines - left the European Commission with a ticketing proposal both radical and unworkable"
How the gospel - the Political Guidelines - left the European Commission with a ticketing proposal both radical and unworkable
Ursula von der Leyen called her disciples, the Commissioners, to gather around. Holding up a bound edition of the Political Guidelines, she conferred a great responsibility onto each of them. Beckoning disciple for transport, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, towards her, she gave him his instructions: "cross-border train travel is still too difficult

@jon Heresy ! Heresy !
Would it be useful to email our representatives about the issues with the proposal and try to convince them to amend the proposal to multiple tickets pax rights ?

"Our vision is very clear," says Tzitzikostas. "One journey, one ticket!"
If only it were to work like that
