    Have you have heard of the saying "to read someone the Riot Act", in the sense of warning someone / telling someone off?

    Have you *actually read* the Riot Act?

    @neil
    not read it literally, but definitely read it or evoked it figuratively many times (teacher).

      @neil I am aware of the phrase in that context and also in the old legal sense of how it used to need to be applied (I believe it has been replaced now).

        @neil I just selected my option, then inadvertently hit the "See Results" button. So I don't think my vote can now ever be recorded.

        So ...

        Heard of it, never read it.

                  Umm. I don't remember them doing so during the various 1980's riots so probably quite archaic.

                  Additional: The AI in my Internet search engine confidently states in was the Criminal Law Act 1967 for England and Wales and 1973 for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

                  That's might even be correct! Not as archaic as I thought πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

                          In a voice full of pathos and gravitas Neil reads out the 1714 Riot Act Proclamation:

                          "Our sovereign lord the King chargeth and commandeth all persons, being assembled, immediately to disperse themselves, and peaceably to depart to their habitations, or to their lawful business, upon the pains contained in the act made in the first year of King George, for preventing tumults and riotous assemblies. God save the King."
