Question for #Blind and maybe also #LowVision folks: are there any #VideoGames or #mobile #games that are particularly good?
-
@b_cavello I'm not blind myself but I liked playing Blind Drive - it was made to be played without sight and I found I had a better time with it when I closed my eyes.

Did you ever drive blindfolded? Now’s your chance! An award-winning, black comedy arcade action game - played with your ears.

Question for #Blind and maybe also #LowVision folks: are there any #VideoGames or #mobile #games that are particularly good? Is there a blind game design scene?
I know there are tactile dice and things for some tabletop RPGs and things. While I’m especially curious about digital or video games, I’d also love to hear about more analog examples that are great!

HI! I run a game jam all about making blind accessible games, here is our wiki! https://gamesforblindgamers.miraheze.org/wiki/Main_Page
And here is a list of example games:
Then this is a list of accessible games made by a blind gamer who is trying to make a master list!

@ater @b_cavello Oh hey, I was summoned! I replied directly to the thread with all our links, thanks for thinking of me! I don't post on here nearly as much as I used to, but we just did jam wrap up stuff last year so lots of cool games to check out! We had some absolute bangers. I'm trying to figure out how to get everyone to steal an accessibility feature from onw of the winners cause it was so good.

The American Federation for the Blind (#AFB) lists some examples of products under their Games and Activities section, but it’s pretty limited, and some of the links are broken/outdated.

#askFedi #BoostsAppreciated@b_cavello May take a few replies so please bear with me.
Most of the games for blind/VI people are accessible versions of card, dice, puzzle, and word games. There are also some audio versions of games like Breakout. A company called Blindfold Games makes a ton of these, and others.

@b_cavello There are also MUDs, basically text-based MMORPG-style games. The most popular among blind people is Alteraeon, which I play quite a bit these days. There's a custom windows client for blind players that includes sound effects and a lot of customizability to make the game more immersive and accessible.

@b_cavello A small indy game studio called Fiction Factory Games has made several accessible narrative games that are very fun.
Brok the Investi-gator is another indy game that's fully accessible for blind players and it's quite fun. It abvailable via Steam, game consoles, and for windows, mac, and linux via itch.io.

@b_cavello American Counsel of the Blind's audio description project has also started keeping track of accessible game releases, including a limited selection of mainstream games like The Last of Us and The Last of Us 2.
Lastly, one of my favorite games that's available for IOS is Blind Mahjong.

Download Blind Mahjong by Li Zhou on the App Store. See screenshots, ratings and reviews, user tips and more apps like Blind Mahjong.

That should give you plenty to check out for now. Hope this helps. /fin

#askFedi #BoostsAppreciated@b_cavello Oops. One last thing. I can't forget RS Games, which has made many accessible games for like the last fifteen years. I love their accessible version of Scrabble in particular. It also has visuals so blind players can play with their sighted friends, at least Scrabble does. Not sure about the other games.

I heard that online text MUDs are popular among some blind people. I'd assume text adventures are also accessible.
And strangely some of the fighting games are so accessible, one blind player made it to the championships.
@alienghic @b_cavello Text adventures are accessible. There's an app called Frotz for IOS that has many loaded into it that you van play. I like Curses and Anchorhead in particular.

@b_cavello Apparently the recent @COWCAT game Brok The InvestiGator could be a good contender for this.
@mrgrumpymonkey @b_cavello Yes. I've played Brok the Investi-gator. Fully accessible and very fun.

@b_cavello Okay. Apparently I have more. lol
A blind friend of mine plays the latest Diablo game. Not sure if accessibility is built in by the devs or if it's some sort of mod. There's a history of mods being made for games that make them more accessibll. One of the earliest was a mod for Quake 2 I think.
Hearthstone is an accessible trading card game.

@b_cavello The same friend who plays Diable also plays digital versions of Yugio and Magic the Gathering. Again, not sure if the accessiblity is built in or done via mods.
Some blind people also play Stardew Valley because the audio design is apparently very good. They by use OCR to read the game text and menus.

Those sound like interesting games.
