    Today I was nerdsniped:

If you could start and end anywhere… what js the furthest distance you can travel by train on one #Interrail day on regularly scheduled trains, without doubling back on yourself?

If we allow transfers between stations on local transport and reservations or other supplements, I came up with London St. Pancras to Palermo Centrale, which seems to be 2821km according to @viaduct_world’s routing.

    https://int.bahn.de/en/buchung/start?vbid=83b87ef1%2Daba2%2D4d8d%2Db02f%2D1eab5f99b9f5

But I am now wondering if we could do something involving two night trains, joining the first one at midnight…

What itinerary can you come up with?

(And no, the optima express 35 hour train doesn’t count as they don’t accept Interrail)

@moof the crucial trick with this is to know that interrail days always start at 0000 CET/CEST

so you can catch the Caledonian sleeper from ~Glasgow at 2340 GMT/BST and extend your trip by quite a few miles

@moof @viaduct_world Luckily there are frequent trains between München Hbf and München Ost and another train to Bologna in the same hour (odd). And that one goes a longer route even. Or wait, I seem to have managed to enter a non-existent train into viaduct.world. The real RJ 89 departs at 15:43. Anyway, new total is 3124 km.

@partim oh, huh, did they change it? I'm sure it used to be CET/CEST

i guess you have to get on at Carstairs instead (or, more likely, split ticket it with a seat)

@partim @bovine3dom Also, whilst it would maximise it to 3468km, which is the longest we’ve seen yet, I think that 07:15 London Euston to 08:01 London St Pancras connection is very tight given that you have to do security and passport control…

@moof I can do 2,861km, from Aberdeen - Budapest. Only one probably impossible connection - train arriving in Munich and train leaving Munich at exactly the same time.

@moof Not interrail only as it involves buses too, but you might like the Travelling Turtle channel if you don't follow it already. Some of the challenges include "How far east of the prime meridian can I get in 24h" "Can I get to another continent from London in 24h" etc.

@moof @viaduct_world Flensburg–Hamburg–München–Salzburg–Wien–Kyiv is also quite long, but shorter.

How about this: Brno hl.n. to Palermo Centrale.

It starts at 00:30 and travels 3087km.

                        https://int.bahn.de/en/buchung/start?vbid=e3db1dbe%2D07f8%2D4b64%2Dbe76%2Da98a9e5d6d7e

There is some slack there, too. You could probably route Berlin-Munich through a more roundabout route to add kilometres

@moof So because you got on to the train at Bologna before midnight, you're allowed to stay on for the remaining 17h? Is that all 1 interrail day?

@moof @viaduct_world I already deleted it from my test journey on Viaduct, but it was below 3000 km. Plus Interrail is not valid in Ukraine, of course.

@tml @viaduct_world And that is the current winner….
