A popular tourist attraction on Roanoke Island, NC, the Wading House, using it's large gray boots, trods around the local salt marshes gingerly, carefully, looking for clams. The clams it finds are ground up and processed, to become the semi-precious stone known as topaz.

@ObsidianUrbex It was a walking house that would hunch down and lure people in before the doors would slam shut and it would be eaten. The blocks it is on now are the long term component of an elaborate trap to contain the beast.

The land around those blocks were dredged to allow the local waterway to surround it and discourage casual exploration. An accessway has been provided researchers to study and to periodically feed the creature.

This is actually two items. The metal scaffolding is an abandoned shed-launcher, still loaded and ready to shoot. Shed-launchers were superseded by Marmite cannons because sheds tended to fall apart before impact with the enemy.

This used to be a bridge covered with houses and shops but the bridge was found to be too expensive to be maintained and therefore was scheduled to be proactively demolished.

While the government was trying to acquire all the properties on the bridge to be able to demolish it there was one that refused to budge and wouldn't give up their property.
They even went to court and won. So the government continued demolishing everything except their property.
