@remove_huilo @f4grx @AndrewRadev trouble is all modern video games suck, they were much better back in our day.
@DrHyde @remove_huilo @f4grx @AndrewRadev In other news, the developers of Dysmantle have released a new game into early access: Dysplaced https://www.10tons.com/game/dysplaced/
Dysmantle is incredibly satisfying with fantastic audio design and a very cathartic SMASH ALL THE THINGS theme.
INFRA is from a few years ago but it's a masterwork in environmental storytelling with incredibly deep lore and an ARG that remains unsolved - think of it as a civil engineering murder mystery for a nation's infrastructure. The developer's current game (Obenseuer) is bleak and hilariously awful - a top-notch Finland Simulator that rapidly goes sideways into the supernatural, extending the lore of INFRA. Warning: like malört, Obenseuer is an acquired taste.
NORCO is really unique and haunting, especially if you've ever spent time in the industrial corridors of southern Louisiana.
There are some real gems out there but finding them seems like a full time job.

@AndrewRadev “He?” WTF?

@AndrewRadev wow this PR is truly painful to read. it feels like these social networks made for AIs to talk to each other. I don’t mind AI writing code for you, but you gotta take ownership over the ideas, you can’t just point a finger and say it this or that, you gotta understand it and own it. You posted it online, under your name, not the AI’s.
@eljojo @AndrewRadev "I don’t mind AI writing code for you"
you really should

@dirtside why?

@AndrewRadev I assume helix would serve as a good vim replacement?
@kateyagi @AndrewRadev i've been enjoying it personally
-
@remove_huilo @f4grx @AndrewRadev I'd take that deal on the condition you gave me all the abandoned legacy FORTRAN code that still has technical value and leave me to refactor it into something that can go another 40 years eithout maintenance. No AI, just a decent IDE, and time. I find that work intensely satisfying and relaxing; by all appearances it has no economic value.
@remove_huilo @f4grx @AndrewRadev But honestly, if people don't want to do the work, if they just don't enjoy it, they should go do something else and leave it to those who do regardless of age.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who actually want to do the work but are being railroaded into producing slop, killing their productivity, morale, and motivation.
And worse - at least in the US - health care is directly tied to employment so leaving a job can literally be lethal. It's not a small thing to just walk away from a shiity job when your housing and health care are tied to it. We won't get into how absolutely psychotic, sociopathic, hateful, and broken the software development hiring process is. No sane person would voluntarily subject themselves to such a degrading miserable process.
I don't think age has a lot to do with it - the whole industry is burned out, demoralized, and fed up with SV techbros and oligarchs that keep demanding more growth and higher velocity while slashing staff and shoving more shit like AI down the pipe.
Sadly, a lot of people are so ground down that they use AI as a coping mechanism - nobody cares about code quality, caring and quality are liabilities that keep them from clearing their ticket queue, so their best chance of avoiding the next round of layoffs and thus keeping their home and insulin supply is to sluice out code to keep their KPIs up. It's a race to the bottom but if you're really burned out you may be incapable of caring.
I don't have a good solution. That doesn't mean we shouldn't fight this bullshit tooth and nail and make it as difficult and costly and unpleasant costly to replace professionals with shitty expensive robots run by TESCREAL cultists.

This is in a PR where Shougo, another long-time contributor, communicates entirely in walls of unparseable AI slop text: https://github.com/vim/vim/pull/19413
What a pathetic state after decades of active, thoughtful work. "I asked the chatbot how to write this code", "Well, I asked my chatbot, and "he" doesn't like it". What a fucking embarrassment.
@AndrewRadev
Is it possible that Shougo got his account hacked and the hacker tries to automatically insert vulnerabilities ? -
@AndrewRadev @normalmode @leonardof Yeah I directly checked Neovim and Github showed the notice, because I blocked Claude.
I hope for the best, as I don't have any proper fallback editor.

> Thank you for the detailed feedback! I've addressed all the issues:
> Thank you for the feedback! I agree that following the Vim 8+ naming convention makes sense.
> Thank you for the feedback on naming!
> Thanks for the suggestion! After thinking about this more, I believe repeat_set() / repeat_get() is the right choice:
> Thank you for the feedback. A brief clarification.This isn't even rewriting his own thoughts in whatever bland style the chatbot can muster, it's just dumping people's comments into the bot and copy-pasting whatever it shits out.
This is The Future that boosters want: An endless bikeshedding session where agreeable chatbots trade excessively polite thank-yous and screenfuls of bullet-pointed lists. A bunch of children, getting paid to play around with tamagotchis.
What a bleak fucking future to dream of.
@AndrewRadev feeling reaffirmed in my stance that AI is also a wake-up call to society as a whole—because this so-called AI can only do bullshit formalities and soulless reproduction of expected patterns without doing any real work or any real thinking, whatever job AI can take is 100% a bullshit job that shouldn’t exist in the first place
i feel like this is yanking at some very fundamental systems interwoven in the social fabric, and i’m not sure peopla quite realize the extent of it yet; the repercussions, should it all unravel—which might just happen. the constantly accelerating propagation and increasing information density of communication, and now this technology, seem to me like they’re heralding a sort of collective awakening that perfectly coincides with the decline of the last generations that did not grow up cultivating unprecedented mental flexibility in a rapidly, drastically and unpredictably changing world viewed through the kaleidoscope peephole of the internet. a point in time where we all begin to realize and seriously ask ourselves, “what if we just stopped doing things the way our ancestors did, and reevaluated everything they consider normal? should we let the living organism that is our society be governed by the principles of people who worry about the decline in alcohol and tobacco consumption, or are they a malignant growth that needs to be excised?”
because to me, what this AI does and how it fits into the world, and how it reaches into almost every corner of an average person’s life, just highlights the hypernormal fakeness that permeates everything in our tech-infused modern lifestyle full of abstractions and bureaucracy that keep us from engaging with the real world. i’m starting to think that everyone seemingly having worse ADHD/ASD symptoms than ever is no coincidence either, because deep down we realize that the world in our minds, the one we engage with as a proxy for what is real, is an unrewarding vacuum thirsting for meaning—and being deprived of healthy bonds, closeness and intimacy also means being deprived of things that are absolutely essential for brain development.
how is it that the world is so vivid and full of life, yet so dead and bleak in our minds that we constantly have to surround ourselves with artificial stimuli to keep us occupied with abstractions, afterimages, fantasies and worries about things we collectively made up? how did we all get traumatized and brainwashed so badly we lost our sense of wonder and appreciation for the life that surrounds us, and replaced the warmth in our everyday encounters, that thing we absolutely need for our mental wellbeing, with touchscreens, self-service terminals and machines that show us only what we want to see? why choose to live in concrete jungles where no matter where you go, something tries to drill into your skull to make you want to consume more of the fakeness? or in suburbs where we’re horribly alone with nothing to do and no one to meet? -
@leonardof @phl @AndrewRadev "Copilot started reviewing on behalf of bagder" is what had me worried https://github.com/curl/curl/pull/20793
thanks, that's new for me

@KatS @barubary @AndrewRadev don't switch yet. GNU is still discussing whether to allow LLM vomitted code contributions. Them of all projects not rejecting it on ideological grounds and some emacs manitainers seemingly liking LLMs is not a good sign though.
I will be MAD if I have to abandon emacs because of this shit
@lhp @KatS @barubary @AndrewRadev Oh if they ensloppify emacs I will be on the evening news.

@penny @dirtside maybe we can go straight to basics: I'll start by saying I don't believe in copyright. I know it's necessary in today's world, but I'm personally opposed to it. I think it's a true reflection of capitalism and this world is much more worse off because of it than without.
Regarding AI, I believe there's a distinction between the theoretical technology and the current companies that deploy popular models. As well as downstream effects caused by them.

@f4grx @AndrewRadev I have a radical opinion that every over 45 should be provided an apartment, a latest game console with a subscription, and a lifetime food and beer supply, and banned from working. For exactly this reason.
@remove_huilo take your ageism and put it where the sun doesn't reach @f4grx @AndrewRadev

@eljojo @dirtside I don’t either, but here, I will give you a copypaste of my most recent spiel and then politely, I will block you when I believe it’s been received because I don’t really want to know you at this time
it’s all stolen but I don’t even care about copyright, it’s an existential threat to the internet and to society that is funded by billionaires who hate us
It exists only to cause harm and if you get anything out of it you are only enabling and reaping that harm
I also think by the nature of information theory llms can only digest information and lower the entropy floor- anything they output is worse than what they ingested, anything they remove is destroyed
