One thing about me: I LOVE #trains.
    And so does the #EU.
From the high speed rail plan to passenger rights legislation, #EUPolicy touches #transport policy in countless ways.

I’m preparing a deep dive on trains next.
Is there anything you want to know more about? Ask me questions, tell me fun facts.

@hpod16 I would already be happy if the trains would look as clean as the one on the photo. Over here they will upgrade the rails so the trains can go 20 km/h faster after the high speed train project was scrapped.

@hpod16 My question: when will we finally be able to book any connection starting or originating in the EU on any EU-based train operator site of our choice?

        @radundtat
Well, the European Commission has announced the intention to put forward a legislative proposal to make this kind of thing possible. It’s especially important that your passenger rights get covered should a train be delayed and have you miss a connection in another country.
It’s called multimodal digital mobility services, or #MDMS (which sounds like some kind of drug lol) and is about connecting more than just #trains.

Bonus fun fact: the #EuropeanParliament website to track the progress of proposed laws is called the legislative train schedule!

Legislative proposals take the time they take and honestly my info on this is out of date. I’m going to have to talk to some colleagues who are transport experts

@hpod16 I love trains as well, especially as, traveling with dogs, it's necessary. I'd love to know more about traveling with pets, as it's a nightmare finding the right information, sometimes. We're going to hike in Sweden, this summer, from Italy, and it took so much time to figure out the best solution 😥

@hpod16 Although there are trains crossing national borders in the EU, almost all trains are confined to a country. Why is that? Why are train routes so often determined by national borders, when we are supposed to have free movement in the EU?

This is especially relevant for night trains, where many routes have been cancelled or not been started because they are nationally controlled. This is a major barrier to trade and movement.

                              When were the lines built?
How were the growth of train lines and the growth of humanity planned together (if they were)
When was the Eurailpass first offered?

@hpod16 I love the trains in the EU and they're my first choice in travel. I find that Portugal is isolated. There's just the one line between Lisbon and Madrid, no other stops (I live 3 hours from Lisbon). And the line has been broken for years now. I drive 3 hours to Spain instead and take the train from there. Also, missing a competent website to plan the journey, especially when crossing countries. Competitive pricing is another big issue. How can I promote/advocate for EU rail in Portugal?

@hpod16 I'd like to be able to travel by train without having to buy a ticket on my name.
In the past this was the standard. Nowadays you can hardly travel anonymously, without the state, #google and ad companies knowing your full itinerary.

@hpod16 I’d like to know if it’s true that significant parts of our EU rail network differ in width

@TimothyRoes @hpod16 Short answer is yes but the slightly longer answer is to go read https://jonworth.eu/why-you-probably-should-not-re-gauge-railways-in-europe/ (not because I agree with every word about what Europe should do, but because it is very informative and detailed)

@hpod16 @soaproot I concur! Never again will I say 'rail width'. I'm an expert now, I say rail gauge 🧐
