  • Given that search is dead and I'm interested in good rather than free, does anyone know where's a good source for woodworking plans?
    woodwonk@mindly.socialW woodwonk@mindly.social

    @triploidtree Woodsmith plans are pretty good. They're essentially reprints of projects that have appeared in their magazine.

  • new doctor forms have the usual huge list of common health problems, and columns for whether you currently have that problem or have in the pastwhich means I get to once again answer the question "have you ever coughed before"

    @emily Yes! My favorite: have you ever been confused? (Yes, I had trouble understanding first year calculus 40 years ago.) I often wonder whether they intentionally make these forms ambiguous or if they just delegated the form creation task to some clue-deficient person.

    @eclectech Yep, that's my favorite, too. I also like the bit about growing like corn in the night.

    @eclectech
    "Sometimes, in a summer morning, having taken my accustomed bath, I sat in my sunny doorway from sunrise till noon, rapt in a revery, amidst the pines and hickories and sumachs, in undisturbed solitude and stillness, while the birds sing around or flitted noiseless through the house, until by the sun falling in at my west window, or the noise of some traveller's wagon on the distant highway, I was reminded of the lapse of time. I grew in those seasons like corn in the night, and they were far better than any work of the hands would have been. They were not time subtracted from my life, but so much over and above my usual allowance. I realized what the Orientals mean by contemplation and the forsaking of works. For the most part, I minded not how the hours went. The day advanced as if to light some work of mine; it was morning, and lo, now it is evening, and nothing memorable is accomplished."

  • Just got back from a visit to the free "seed bank" at our local public library.
    woodwonk@mindly.socialW woodwonk@mindly.social

    Just got back from a visit to the free "seed bank" at our local public library. Every year, some business donates all the unsold garden vegetable seed packets from the previous growing season to the library. Despite being labeled "packed for 2025" (or even "2024"), most of the seeds are still viable and will grow for a few years after their original sell-by date.

    The library fills an old card catalog cabinet with the seed packets. The selection varies from year to year, but there are usually at least some of just about every common (US) garden vegetable. They're free to anyone who walks in the door. Yet another reason we support our public library. ❤️
