@TheBreadmonkey this should become a new tradition at office holiday parties.
Mandatory management participation, the rest get to watch.

@rysiek while I'm taking this as a cue to just go to bed and leave computering for tomorrow... RIP to all the shoddily written automations and batch jobs that will fail tonight 🫡
May their knock-on effects be mild tomorrow
@pluralistic I can tell you from anecdotal evidence here in Germany...a LOT of people seem to have invested in private photovoltaic installations in Q1/Q2 of 2026.
One of the big online solar retailers here currently has shipping dispatch times of 24 - 29 workdays (massive increase from previous dispatch times of ~5-7 days).
When people buy these installations, especially the bigger, non-balcony systems they are planned for a lifetime of ~15 years.
That's roughly 8,000-10,000kWh of external energy demand destroyed per household per year!
And honestly I'd say forever, because it seems very unlikely that after 15 years of getting used to free solar energy you'd go back. Especially considering future technological improvements and falling unit prices for both solar panels and battery storage.
I think Rebecca Solnit is absolutely right here.
@sash amazing work!
@tef mhh I'm afraid it currently looks like a net public good because the detrimental effects will just take a generation or two to materialize.
You know, once the first generation that never had to learn a foreign language in order to communicate or consume media will become adults I suspect there will be measurable effects, cause language shapes reality

@losttourist @schrotthaufen @zzt @MrBerard until suddenly there's a law in place that mandates your distro, which probably uses shim, will only be able to get a signed cert from Microsoft's UEFI CA signing service when it has submitted its age-verification for review.
And of course, since we gotta protect the children and generally increase security, now every new system sold must enforce UEFI Secure Boot with a strictly regulated set of platform keys.
