  • Inspired by @eclectech's rant about UK media's new "staycation" obsession & the conversation in the replies:https://things.uk/@eclectech/116544379596101288

@AmeliasBrain @eclectech I will die on the hill that is option 1. Come at me!!

@eclectech you are not alone in this fight! This has slid for far too long. There need to be consequences.

'People don't hate Labour... they hate Starmer', Labour MP tells BBC

That feels demonstrably false. You don't put a reform candidate on a local council because you don't like the labour leader. (well, people are fucking stupid, so maybe they do). Blaming Starmer is lazy.

Unfortunately "just wants to watch the world burn", is now a very active voting block.

  • we joke that when the AI bubble pops and the managers can't afford the chatbot any more, the surviving companies will hire the people who know how shit works to clean up
    tmcfarlane@toot.communityT tmcfarlane@toot.community

@davidgerard "the surviving companies will hire the people who know how shit works to clean up", anyone thinking that clearly hasn't worked in tech. I've been in this shit for over 30 years, no one gets paid to clear up anything.
It's rare for a company with paying customers to care if their product is rubbish. This becomes truer the more the customer pays. (and prices charged are rarely proportional to the quality of the product.

@Yuvalne @mvsde yeah, I'm not sure where LWN getting DDoS'd regularly helps the boring net survive. Or how eyes being diverted to plagiarised copies of the stuff people go out of their way to create helps build communities of interest, (for fun or profit).
I appreciate the sentiment of the post, but I've never given two F's about the death of facebook of twiiter. Stuff moves on, it was always inevitable. But the death of search will kill independent community creation.

@nixCraft my linux desktop shows that model at 2.5GB at the moment. So much LLM, but the spell check and autocorrect are still worse than they were 10 years ago?!

@phl @christianschwaegerl @gutenberg_org this book is worth a read, though the author warns of the dangers of anthropomorphising the octopus, and then proceeds to spend the rest of hte book doing it.
    Good read though.

@filippo first time I clicked 237 didn't show in the closed list. I remove the closed filter, and check and saw it in the list, but then when I go back to the closed filter view it is now showing.
We've been getting some random 502 on various GH hosted assets today, I wouldn't be surprised if there's some shit happening they haven't reported on yet.

  • I found this very upsetting.
    tmcfarlane@toot.communityT tmcfarlane@toot.community

@robpike this is baffling. With a stolen phone this appears to be trivially exploitable. The idea that "it's not being exploited so we don't need to fix it", is crazy. It's not being exploited because no one has bothered commoditising the exploit *yet*.
