  • @elebertus @nyc IIRC, didn’t GNU Mach and Hurd have some AI slop stuff happen?
    nyc@discuss.systemsN nyc@discuss.systems

@mrmasterkeyboard @elebertus I haven't heard a peep out of Hurd since before the big AI trend made codebase pollution a concern. Beyond that, I've only recently been made to realise the issues with AI threatening open source in the past few weeks. If Hurd has suffered codebase pollution, this is the first I'm hearing of it.

  • One thing I learned at #OggCamp was that this happened so recently...

@jtonline The legal department at IBM is apparently ginormous. It's little wonder that they dragged it out until several successors down the line got a mere pittance. OTOH it's surprising that IBM settled at all at the end.

  • Some org started rehiring junior devs because AI companies keep increasing their token costs.

@nixCraft How long for the EU esp. Germany? My runway isn't really all that much longer.

  • The recent post criticising Free Software advocates for advocating user-modifiable software and then being annoyed at LLMs annoys me and the reason is best illustrated by this analogy:
    nyc@discuss.systemsN nyc@discuss.systems

@david_chisnall I think it's mostly trying to drive a stake through the heart of copyleft or at minimum enable mass copyright laundering so as to evade the source (re)distribution requirements of their licences. It's something of a question how a code clawback is supposed to happen in the event of ever getting broad recognition of derivation via LLM, which is itself not poised for near-term positive outcomes.

  • Peter Thiel: the only man who read The Lord of the Rings and deeply identified with Sauron
    nyc@discuss.systemsN nyc@discuss.systems

@Daojoan The PayPal mafia aren't fans of J. R. R. Tolkien nor „The Lord of the Rings.” Rather, they're fans of Кирилл Юрьевич Еськов (Kirill Yeskov) „Последний кольценосец” („The Last Ringbearer”), which while vastly more benign than its famous aficionados make it, reverses the roles of the good and bad guys.

Peter Thiel was the guy who had René Girard (and several of his colleagues) tearing his (their) hair out until the day he died about how sinister the way Thiel twisted Girard's work has been. It seems likely to me that Yeskov himself feels similarly about Thiel's viewpoint on his work, though I'm unaware of any direct comments he might have made on it.
