I must say this is a surprisingly dude-heavy audience for ecology/botany.

European Forest Institute Mediterranean Forum 2026 about to kick off for this week in València. This includes a carob workshop on Thusday and Friday, which takes in the entire carob production chain, not just researchers.

I should add that I'd be happy to meet up with Mastodonians on the way at non-smoking (or lighter smoke) outdoor cafés/eateries or just parks.

Especially interested in meeting plant scientists and/or cyclists, but anyone progressive is cool.

Would be nice to have "'net gets" like the old days.

I'll be in València, Bilbao and Freiburg for sure. Possibly Antwerp and Vienna. It all depends on where I can get free/affordable lodgings and train seat reservations!

@makary I think the historians will have a better handle on it than people who only work quantitatively. And when it comes to that sort of data, we should have good data going back at least to the 19th century and probably further back.

People have studied authoritarianism and made lists of steps towards it. But I still haven't run across academics who've studied how just order comes out of chaos - what are the necessaries that make more just democracies arise and stick around, replacing authoritarianism, oligarchies, etc?
