  • Q: Does anyone know of any EU-based company out there advising large organisations how to detach from big tech?
    michael@westergaard.socialM michael@westergaard.social
It depends on the kind of detachment you're looking for. We do custom software and cloud-agnostic migrations (so hosting of cloud software, not standard software like Office 365 but we do offer/suggest alternatives for some software, e.g., self-hosted Gitlab instead of Github).

We have been looking at the European market and migrated our own stuff away from US providers to European #Scaleway. We're advising our customers (mid-large Dutch companies) on similar migrations, and have the past decade advocated for using standards-based cloud services to facilitate switching (e.g., using Kubernetes over ACS or ECS and plain Postgres over Aurora).

For €200 you should be expecting 10 Gbit/s + managed these days. I largely use Mikrotik; their switches are on the lower end of the professional spectrum and their RouterOS works perfectly fine.

Beware that Mikrotik's passively cooled switches tend to overheat if you're running them at 10 Gbit/s without active cooling (that's a general problem – once you go beyond 1 Gbit/s you need proper cooling).

You'll be paying extra for twisted pair at over 1 Gbit/s speeds – both in terms of hardware, power, and heat, so it's worth considering switching to SPF+ (though pulling fibers sucks). And if you're going faster than 1 Gbit/s, expect to have to upgrade to cat 7 or 8 cables if you're still on 5 or 6.

I've a Ubiquity wifi hot-spot that I'm running without management software (it's possible if you just have the one), but they're a bit politically problematic these days.

Otherwise, this Youtube channel reviews a ton of prosumer stuff: youtube.com/@ServeTheHomeVideo They did a 12 port 10 Gbit/s switch @ $229 a couple of days ago but also did smaller/slower switches over the past couple years (and 800 Gbit/s switches if you're feeling cheeky).

I'm already doing a handful of different analyses, and UMAP looks like it might be interesting to add to the mix…

This is a PCoA (not PCA as I have rankings with distances) using convex hull visualization of DBSCAN clusters (DBSCAN run in full n-dimensional space, projected onto the two most significant dimensions).

Suppose, I have some points and I've run a clustering algorithm on them. Now, I'd like to draw the clusters.

The points are in n-dimensional space, but I've run a PCoA (similar to a PCA) on them and reduced it down to two dimensions.

I'm thinking of drawing either a convex hull of the clustered points or drawing the shape ordering points by angle around cluster centroids. Is there a more canonical/better looking way I'm overlooking?
